Romney, supplanted as the GOP front-runner by Perry, has defended a federal program, and said Perrys comments will be exploited by the Democrats in a general election campaign.
This election is about choices and voters and voters will have the opportunity to choose between Mitt Romney, who wants to fix and strengthen Social Security for the next generation, and Rick Perry, who wants to dismantle it, Romney communications director Gail Gitcho said in a statement.

To the headline: why is this a surprise. Romney is after all a liberal.
This is not surprising, he is still defending Romneycare.
Another of N reasons (where N is a very large number) why I will ‘not evah’ vote for RINOmney.
This guy is the human version of a quantum particle - everywhere at once, and when trying to pin him down, his answers depend upon the measurement.
His default position is liberal but his dominant position is reflexive opportunist. He’d push abolition of social security if he thought it would get him elected.
Perry, “Mitt, I hear you picked two very big endorsements this week, Jimma Carter & Bill Clinton.”
Romney will indeed push anything he thinks will help him win. The interesting question is why he thinks the SS ploy will help him win a Republican primary. Is he truly that delusional? Apparently you can take the politician out of MA but you can’t take MA out of the politician.
I’ve never seen a man garrote himself before. It’s an interesting if somewhat ghoulish spectacle.
Romney doubles down on the SS lie. RINO is to kind a label.
Another lie. Neither wants to dismantle it. Romney knows this but he's fear mongering. This doesn't help Romney with his credibility issues stemming from being on all sides of any issue.
Mitt Romney=the liberal’s choice for 2012 Republican candidate.
Did Clinton really endorse him? I heard about Carter but not Clinton. That is great if he did although I think Carter was the topper. :)
