To Jennifer Workman, God Himself commands her to protect her 8 year-old daughter Madison.
I am a steward of the Lord for this child, she said as she walked outside her single level home in Lenore West Virginia on Monday. And I am not going to let anyone tell me what's best for my child.
In 1999, Madisons older sister developed autism just months after receiving her state-required immunizations for measles, mumps and rubella.
Right after she received her childhood vaccines her verbal...her potty training everything had stopped, she said.
And so two years ago when it came time for Madison to receive her immunizations, Workman said no. Her elementary school in Lenore responded by barring Madison from attending class. And thus began a two year legal struggle with the State of West Virginia that may very well determine the limits of parental rights in America in regard to vaccines.

The lives that have been saved via these vaccinations is beyond our wildest dreams.
I have a VERY old news article about a family with smallpox. IIRC, two of the children died.
Folks would put baskets of food on their stoop. This was in NYS.
Measles is still a killer.
I am so sick of hearing about this; this isn’t about civil liberties or individual rights, but about saving millions in this country from diseases that KILL and kill painfully. These idiots are being illogical and not thinking at all about the millions that are put at risk for their irrational stance on vaccinations. If they don’t want to end up gettting their kids vaccinated, then let them keep their kids at home and away from the schools where disease is eaasily spread.
I suspect you are rather conveniently forgetting about all the injuries caused by the oral vaccinations that were first used, and still used in undeveloped countries. Iron lungs were the pits, but being a paraplegic as a friend of mind is due to a vaccination is not exactly a perfect alternative.
In fact according to a doctor that I had this discussion with, the only reported cases of polio world wide are always related to an oral vaccination.
I'm aware of the one batch that hit a town very badly and the subsequent change.
All my kids had the oral vaccine and that was circa 1965.
Polio world wide...they stopped using the vaccine in many regions and Polio popped up again.
I remember when we couldn’t go to the swimming pool because all such activities were under quarentine for polio.
The sad thing is so many young people were paralysed or died do to this horrible disease.
Article from the time:
4/25/1954
Massive Polio Vaccine Trial Begins in U.S.
The Vaccine Advisory Committee approved a field test of Salks polio vaccine. The trial began the next day, with the vaccination of a six-year-old boy in Virginia.
In all, over 1.3 million children participated in the trial. The trial was a randomized, double-blind test, meaning that children were randomly assigned to either the control group or the vaccine group. Neither the children (or their parents) nor health officials knew which children had received the vaccine and which had received the injected placebo fluid. (A smaller control group received no injection. Rather, officials observed them throughout the trial period for signs of polio infection.)
It would take almost a year to analyze the results and determine whether the vaccine provided protection against polio.
......................
People don’t remember that Jonas Salk was the developer of the vaccine.
Sabin came after with the oral. Which had bad side effects.
I guess if this happen now. Everyone would b saying NO POLIO VACCINES.
My dad went to school in the 40s and 50s. He said every fall kids would not return to classes because they died of polio over the summer.
Good to see you’ve bought into the party line hook line and sinker. It most certainly is anti-conservative principles to be forced into vaccinations.
There are many health reasons why I choose to not immunize my daughter. It is however, my right as a parent to decide her health treatment.
The government and school system has no business telling me to vaccinate my child.
Sure it is. If you don't control your own body, your a slave.
Either the person shouldn't have gone to the mandated school or did something else. But, inferring that the individual doesn't have the final say to what happens to their own body is a road that best left untraveled.
There are actions for everything. Refusing a vaccine and getting sick is part of those choices.
I had a client a few years back...used a walker. He told me he missed the vaccine by 6 months.
The anti-vaccination movement has undoubtedly cost lives. Andrew Wakefield himself is ostensibly responsible for the deaths of many, many children.

I'd like to see a study done of the number of senior citizens who catch opportunistic infections after receiving flu shots. Of course you won't see such a study, because the data would be very difficult to gather, and the flu shot industry wouldn't want anything to do with it.

Back before vaccinations, a very high percentage of children in the US died due to many diseases. You would want to go back to those days? Everything that improves lives or the world in general has some risk.
Am betting on FR 99% of the anti-vaccine groupies have their kids vaccinated and take up the anti position as a political libertarian style argument.
>> I am so sick of hearing about this; this isnt about civil liberties or individual rights,
No, it is exactly about Liberty.
As of May 11, 2007, the 1,637 adverse vaccination reactions reported to the FDA via the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) included 371 serious reactions. Of the 42 women who received the vaccine while pregnant, 18 experienced side effects ranging from spontaneous abortion to fetal abnormalities.
Side effects published by Merck & Co. warn the public about potential pain, fever, nausea, dizziness and itching after receiving the vaccine. Indeed, 77% of the adverse reactions reported are typical side effects to vaccinations. But other more serious side effects reported include paralysis, Bells Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and seizures. ...

yes. good to see the non-conservatives (statists) here exposing themselves. always good to know ahead of time who would cuff you with “kindness.” a true conservative has no problem letting the marketplace decide the efficacy of any technological advancement.
With the ever increasing onslaught of illegal immigrants, diseases from the third world show up in major cities. About 5 years ago, a co-worker’s daughter-in-law tested positive for TB and underwent treatment for 6 months. At the time, the DIL was volunteering time tutoring. Most of the kids were from an area with high numbers of illegals. Also in the DFW area, another blast from the past, whooping cough aka diptheria, has shown up from time to time with fatal results. Again, in areas of the city with high numbers of illegals. No need to go to the third world to get these diseases, they now show up right on your doorstep. Convenient.
With illegals in nearly every part of the country and ever increasing numbers of parents refusing to vaccinate their children, it is only a matter of time before there is a return of outbreaks of diseases in this country that were eradicated decades ago.
Vaccines, like other types of pharmaceuticals, are not without risk, but I would rather take my chances with a thoroughly tested vaccine with statistically negligible risks than face the possibly fatal disease it is designed to prevent.
