Sidenote: It's time 'lil buckaroos ... The final selection from me tonight came in number six on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and is part of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. It was the Beach Boys 3rd Number One hit in the US and it also reached Number One worldwide.

Wilson first enlisted Pet Sounds lyricist Tony Asher for help in putting words to his idea. Soon after they met, Wilson asked his new writing partner Van Dyke Parks to pen lyrics for the song as well, but Parks declined. The song was recorded with the Asher lyrics, but in the months that Brian spent layering and rerecording the tracks he eventually used Beach Boys band-mate Mike Love's lyrics on the final Beach Boys version.

But, Brian was never satisfied. In 2004, when he finally finished his epic SMiLE, a project that took some 38 years to reach completion, he reverted to the original Asher lyrics and completed his "pocket symphony" masterpiece and produced four and a half minutes of pure genius. By 2004, the technology had finally caught up to Brian's vision and he was able to get what he heard in his head on tape.

As an interlude between the versions, I offer Todd Rundgren's amazing cover from 1976, where he single-handedly plays and sings all the parts in a remarkable production and ultimate tribute.
