Rick Perry loves science. Political science.
Washington Post ^ | September 16, 2011 | Ezra Klein

Texas Gov. Rick Perry doesn’t have a reputation as the most scientifically inclined of candidates.....

But there’s one kind of science that Perry is willing, even eager, to run on: political science. And that should have his opponents worried.

In...“The VictoryLab,” Sasha Issenberg digs deep into Perry’s campaign organization, which he calls “the brainiest political operation in America.” After seven straight wins at the ballot box, Perry’s organization is also among the most fearsome in America. And there’s nothing unscientific about it. In fact, compared with Perry’s organization, every other campaign in America appears in denial of the evidence.

The hero of this story is Dave Carney, Perry’s campaign manager and a guy who embraced political science in order to attack the traditional campaign-industrial complex.......

...Carney invited political scientists into Perry’s 2006 gubernatorial reelection bid. He allowed them to create, in effect, a laboratory for experiments testing different forms of campaigning.

That was, to say the least, an unorthodox use of both the campaign’s money and the candidate’s time. And the candidate wasn’t known for his excessive regard for academics. “You don’t have to have a PhD from Harvard in political science to understand our economics,” Perry liked to say.

But Carney thought there was another side of Perry that the initiative could appeal to: He was cheap. And evidence can be a boon to cheapskates. “When you’re spending $25 million on an election and you can save 2 percent, that’s a lot of money,” Carney said. “You’ll have more money to spend on something that works.”

.....Perry easily won his subsequent elections.

That’s a lesson that Governor — potentially, President — Perry could apply to the science of global warming, as well. If we take the science seriously,...and be able to get a head start on preparing for it.....

“And I truly believe that—unlike so many liberal pundits—he knows the Source of wisdom is not located in his own mind! “

I tend to agree. It must be that *miracle* of grace.

Actually, higher education CAN provide the environment for improving your IQ....IF the brain is properly engaged in the learning process...and does not simply and passively accept all information presented as correct.

I thought Romney was a skillful political operator but after reading that, I am pretty sure Perry will win this thing.

How many teachers are able to provide that environment? I can count on one hand how many good teachers I’ve had through 13 years of schooling.

I think they also present us with model specimens of GK Chesterton’s famous quote:

“The first effect of not believing in God, is that you lose your common sense.”

Ain’t that the truth! The left has replaced God with Government as the supreme authority. A dangerous path indeed.....

[Didn't a consensus of scientists a few centuries ago claim that the world was flat and one would fall off the edge if one ventured out in the ocean too far?]

No: this is a common misconception.

In Columbus's day most educated people knew that the world was round. They also knew the size of the world and also knew that China was way too far away for Columbus to get to.

What they didn't know was that there was a whole Continent waiting to be discovered.

CERN has demonstrated that the sun’s magnetic field is responsible for decreased cosmic rays, which reduces cloud formation. Global warming is a result of the sun’s activity.

See the following article: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100102296/sun-causes-climate-change-shock/

“The first effect of not believing in God, is that you lose your common sense.”

FRiend, that's not the quote.

"When people stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing: they believe in anything" — G.K. Chesterton.

He went to describe about how such people start believing in mutually conflicting ideas, and/or change their beliefs every week - its a real tour de force. I think it's found in 'Orthodoxy'.

Actually, my quote was correct and is from one of his Fr. Brown books.

No, climate change is caused by SUVs and coal power plants.

Al Gore said so.

`Mexican standoff’: Perry doesn’t think we can return millions of Mexican cooks, while the liberals think we can actually lower the Earth’s temperature by eating less Mexican food ...
On second thought, maybe they’re both right.

CW, I went to the actual article and read the entire thing. It was really interesting to see how Rick Perry brought in political scientists who would challenge traditional politics, and it was even more interesting to see the guts Rick Perry exhibited to follow their innovative campaigning suggestions. It will be refreshing to see no more “politics as usual”.

The garbage global warming nonsense the author tried to compare with the use of innovative political changes never made it to first base though.

Thanks for the article!

If Perry was REALLY smart he’d hire Delinpole on his staff, or, if James refuses, someone who at least reads Delinpole regularly. (Like me.)
