From Simon Conway's Facebook page:
"SOURCES CLOSE TO THE CAMP..... As predicted on my show nine days ago, Sarah Palin to announce for the Presidency tomorrow (Friday) - the day Constitution Day is observed. We'll be talking about it on 540 WFLA from 6am Eastern...."
“...in other words, you aren’t even good enough to “teach” at a state university.”
Straw man.
Parsing that out, she said "you are being obtuse." She did not say, "your reply is being obtuse." If you just substitute the word "stupid" for "obtuse," in the first expression, there is no syntactic and no semantic error. Obviously, if your point is that words by themselves cannot be "obtuse" per se, I would say that was a debatable point. But her unambiguous use of you are rather than your reply is saves us from having that debate, because it clearly indicates she is imputing "obtuseness" to the person who wrote the reply, which is an indisputably correct usage. Are we there yet?
I'm asking you to be specific. Actually, in the post you are replying to, I asked what your area of expertise is.
Are you telling me that, on the college level, you teach every single era, every single piece of "HISTORY" that every was...........from all of the ancient civilizations through modern times, including politics?
It may be a rather long time since I was in college, but even back then, there were no courses that were called just "history".
believe it or not, it was one of my posts that was called "obtuse".
Try again.................... ;^)
She gave her area of teaching rather than the specific course.
LOLOLOL!!! [^)
What a maroon!
(for others who may be reading this: IMO, nopardons is one of the most eloquent posters on FR ... to call np "obtuse" is like calling Todd Palin a "metro-sexual." {^)
That’s all ya got? LOL
“Try again....................”
Why? The same point has already been correctly made by others as well.
And then, there's SMU, which you left out of the mix, which means that either you don't teach there, either, or I actually know more about colleges and universities in Texas than you do. hehehehehehehehehehehe
Many colleges and universities, across America are "TIER 1" research universities.........but that still wouldn't elevate ALL those who teach at one. You've just proved nothing; as usual. LOL
Nope.........logic.
Condoleezza Rice
Well, I wasn’t trying to be too specific. I am currently teaching two freshmen-level American history courses through the nineteenth century, and one graduate course on the South. My expertise is in Southern, Conservatism and American religion in the nineteenth century. The field of “Capitalism” is also becoming very interesting, particularly the last ten years. I did not do much of my graduate work in this area, but am working with this historiography now and plan to expand my research into this area in the future. Flame away.
Your reply was practically a textbook example of a straw man. Prove otherwise.
I am not remotely interested in “proving” I am a good or competent teacher to you. You asked a question. I answered it. SMU is not a state school. That is why I didn’t list it. You were trying to tear me down by saying that I wasn’t good enough to teach at a state university. I am fully aware that private universities can also be Tier 1. Yes, the various campuses are part of one system. And actually UT and A&M are very closely related. But various campuses have redundant departments, particularly departments that are required across all degrees like history and English.
Just how, exactly was "You're being obtuse now. We're done." a "correct" use of that word? I wasn't being "stupid", my post was clear and factual, and obviously she was incapable of refuting what I had said.
Okay.........from now on, I'll ignore what people post and just call them names, using a $1.00 word, instead of one worth a nickle. :-)
And I asked for her area of expertise. It’s a rather simple query.
Did you read that post of mine?
Unlike some, I took time and effort to state facts. I shouldn't have wasted my time, I guess. LOL
But you seem to desperately want to be DRey's "knight in white armor", without actually looking at what began it all.
“And I asked for her area of expertise.”
And she gave you her AREA.
Simple indeed.
