AUSTIN, Texas A Texas teenager was charged with assault after six students were hospitalized when they ate marijuana-laden brownies he served them at a school band practice, myFOXaustin.com reported Wednesday.
Kevin Coffey, a 17-year-old student at Austin's Lake Travis High School, told authorities he didn't know the brownies contained drugs when he handed them out -- but police said text messages he had sent to friends proved otherwise.
Police said many of the students were unaware of the brownies being laced with pot and six were transported to the hospital by their parents.

Hard to imagine that he wouldn't get caught, after the band segued from a Sousa March into "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".... /s
Seemed like a good idea at the time, perhaps?
Hospitalized for eating pot brownies??? Are they trying to tell us that none of those kids had ever been stoned before?
Then again, eating it in brownies can be quite intoxicating, or so I'm told.

We are officially a nation of pussies. Ok, the kid should be in trouble,,, fine, got it. But a charge of “assault”,, and parents speeding their little darlings to the EMERGENCY ROOM? LOL
They should have taken them to Burger King for the munchies, and had a talk with ‘em about how this is a little lesson to file away.

Eating the stuff, if made right, will hit you ten times as hard as smoking it...or so I'm told. Being that high can be unsettling even for someone who has been high before. If one has never been high before, it can be downright scary. You can't OD on pot, but you sure can think you will.

Is there a different standard way of treating crimes of poisoning than calling them assaults?

Neither the kids nor parents knew the cause of the symptoms the kids were experiencing. The kids might have been given LSD or another psychedelic hallucinogen with potentially very serious long term consequences. It could have been a poison. Some do have hallucinogenic side effects. Even if the boy admitted it was pot, why believe him?
The parents did the right thing by taking their children to the hospital.

I say that as a lifelong musician.

Yes, that was hilarious. I loved the part where he said to the 911 operator, something along the lines of: " I think we've had too much and we're going to die...by the way, do you know the score for the Redwings game?"

Overeating pot can be terrifying. Even for a chain pot-smoker. For those people that never smoke, it must have been excruciating.
While I support legalization of nearly everything, I believe there should be jail time for drugging someone without consent. Especially with something more serious like mushrooms or LSD, where unknowingly overdosing is extreme psychological torture that can last for days.
There was a 911 tape released a while ago where a cop made brownies. He and his wife ate too much and admitted they did on the 911 call. They were frantic and actually thought they were dying.

Doctors found high levels of THC the active chemical in cannabis in their system, but the seriousness of their sickness was not reported. They probably forgot what their symptoms were.
