An investigator looking into the crash of Swissair Flight 111 near Peggys Cove, N.S., says he was prevented by senior RCMP and aviation safety officials from pursuing his theory that an incendiary device might have been the cause.
"There was sufficient grounds to suspect a criminal device on that plane," retired RCMP sergeant Tom Juby, who was an arson investigator assigned to the Swissair file, told CBC's The Fifth Estate.
"I'm convinced that the investigation was improperly done," he said.
The flight from New York to Zurich crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 2, 1998, killing 229 passengers and crew. The plane carried a Saudi prince, a relative of the former shah of Iran and high profile UN officials. A half a billion dollars of diamonds and gems were also never found.
But Juby said high levels of magnesium a key ingredient in an incendiary device were discovered in the cockpit area. Several other investigators and a federal scientist who The Fifth Estate spoke to supported Juby's informed suspicions.
Metallurgist Dr. Jim Brown discovered suspicious levels of magnesium and other elements associated with arson in melted wiring from the section of the plane that suffered the greatest fire damage.
"There was a lot of magnesium. More than I would have expected," he said.
Instead, the TSB was focused on the crash being the result of an accident. Any hint of criminal activity meant it would be forced to drop the probe and turn it over to the RCMP.
Juby said the RCMP did not support his findings and that he was pressured to stop his own inquiries. He said the RCMP brass ordered him to remove any reference to magnesium or a suspected bomb from his investigative notes.
Juby said he has tried but failed to set the record straight inside the RCMP for years. He said the system failed too.
"If Canada can't follow through on 229 potential homicides, then you know, what happens when there's only one?" he said.
The RCMP or the TSB repeatedly refused to comment about Juby's allegations.
Maybe someday the US government wll finally admit what really happened to TWA Flight 800 too.
My guess...the gems and diamonds were never on the plane.
The government can never admit that they can't protect us.
Their whole $cam depends on people believing that they can.
Just about a week before Sept. 11.
There was supposed to be a tape...but I guess that got lost.
that was in 1996???
please, enough with the tinfoil hats.
I always thought this one was suspicious. The same for the mid-Atlantic Air France crash, too.
It’s really sad when you realize that trusting your government is really STUPID.
A week and three years.
where is the proof of a terror attack? There is none. There have been numerous studies by numerous agencies both in the US and UK, and there was no terror attack, none.
I agree with you —only an idiot would buy the TWA 800 “spontaneous center fuel tank explosion” lie.
Sure —the front got blown off and the a/c GAINED 2,000 feet in elevation.
Sure!
Probably no-one wanted to notify Clinton that a terrorist had taken down a plane over Nova Scotia - didn’t want to interrupt his torrential Lewinsky!
I didn't say Sept 11, 2001. I said Sept. 11.
A week...and three years.
And if you want something to wear your tin foil hat about, I (my opinion) do believe there is a bad guy here - the FAA for bending over for the airlines. Once upon a time an aircraft of that size would have had three crew members, a pilot, copilot, and flight engineer.
In a situation like this, the flight engineer would have been dispatched to the cabin to see what was going on. It is quite possible that one of the ceiling panels could have been opened and the fire extinguished with a hand held. Unfortunately this was a two crew plane. The pilot and copilot were stuck with getting their information from the cabin crew (which not to be offensive, but is mainly women and homosexuals - rarely will you find anyone technical back there).
The crew flew around talking to various centers, dumping fuel, etc while the fire slowly went out of control. Again this is only my opinion, but if there are 200+ souls on board, there ought to be a third crew member in the cockpit.
Please, people here just want flt 800 to be a terror attack despite there was never any evidence of it. In fact, AF1 was fixed soon after Flight 800.
The forward 30 ft. of the plane was removed by the blast, after the fuselage unzipped like the plastic around a bottle cap. This section plunged and the fuel remaining in the wing lines continued to fuel the plane for another minute or two. This explains why witnesses on the ground ‘saw’ a “missile” streaking upwards-It was actually the plane, on fire, ascending. Now, those witnesses say they saw a, at most, 20 ft. missile, but they didn’t see a 100+ ft 747? The book, “In The Blink Of An Eye” is about TWA 800. All I’m saying is that it wasn’t a missile that caused the crash.
But the MD 11 was another story. There are no unexplained things about that crash - and it is a disgraceful black mark against the aftermarket aviation industry and aviation modifications in general.
