Reporting from Washington The biggest political donor to Texas Gov. Rick Perry during his 11-year tenure has not been one of the state's oil barons or cattle ranchers, but a Washington-based organization into which Perry helped funnel millions of dollars.
The Republican Governors Assn. which Perry chaired twice gave him $4 million in the last five years, making it the largest single source of the $102.8 million he has raised since 2001.
The organization's donations came as Perry helped infuse the governors' group with millions of dollars from some of his major political patrons. Out of the $217 million the RGA raised between January 2006 and June 2011, $68.7 million came from 139 donors who have also given to Perry, according to a new report being released Tuesday morning by the watchdog group Texans for Public Justice.
Nearly a third of those contributors were wealthy Texans who form the backbone of Perry's finance operation many of whom were not active donors to the RGA until 2006, when the Texas governor took on a bigger role at the organization.

Financial kickback is only one side of the coin when it comes to the permanent political class.
The other is political. Maybe Perry will speak out against the permanent political class.
Maybe he’ll pretend it doesn’t exist.
[And the problem is?? This is how politics works...ALWAYS has...[
Which works fine until; we are all bankrupt. I just risked my life (literally) writing a book about Harry eid’s crony corruption. So according to you, I should have been Reid’s biggest supporter because:
This is how politics works...ALWAYS has...
[See reply 13. In terms of comparison, Merck’s contributions are a pittance.]
It isn’t that one deal, it is the pattern. I just spent a good chunk of my life exposing how Harry Reid runs the scam.
No more politics as usual. We are bankrupt, kaput, and you want more of the same?
I absolutely want nothing of the status quo. I have surveyed the current field and there is not what I would consider a "pure" Conservative amongst them. Disappointing? Yes, but we must use what tools we have to generate a change.
Perry has demonstrated a willingness to listen to his constituency and has a lot to offer in terms of necessary changes. Perfect? No. But a start. We cannot afford to have substantial infighting which could give us Romney (MCCain II), and we sure as heck cannot afford 4 additional years of Obama.
But it is the REPUBLICAN Governors Assoc.
That just might skew your math a little.
Simply because they are all POLITICIANS, raising money is what they do.
And you can throw the undecided one into that heap, too.
And if you think Perry can be bought by $4 million dollars, well, he’s offended.
Okay. Show me examples.
I think I saw that listed on Amazon....."A Drama Queen gives Dingy Harry a Rectal Exam".
The RGA is not the RNC establishment. the RGA, for example ran much, much better ads and campaign support in 2010 than did the RNC or the Senate committees, with a much better record in key battlegrounds. They run a much better shop and make much smarter decisions.
I’m sure you’re right. Those outsiders at the Republican Governors Association are well known.
Logic should tell you that ALL politicians have donors that can be spun to reflect badly on them. And you shouldn't have to be shown examples, but here's just one.....
Contributions to unnamed PAC (starts with S and ends with H)
T H McElvain Oil & Gas.....$5,000
Duer Wagner Oil & Gas....$5,000
A W Williams Drilling....$1,000
Richard Solomon, Aramco....$500
M A Custer Petroleum....$500
Obviously this politician, who one FReeper taglines as not for sale, IS for sale, and has sold out to those horrid Oil Companies.
AND, this same PAC has over 80 contributors of $500 or more who identify as RETIRED!!!!
So when this politician panders to the geezers, you can rest assured they have earned their panders.
Now this was a simple search, for just one PAC.....it can be done for ANY politician, for just about any industry or special interest.
Technically, I guess you could say they ALL take bribes, it's just a matter of size and timing.
Okay, where did she mandate one of their products? who in her staff works for one of those companies? Family members? What special favors were done?
Seems like you’re trying to equate all political donations with what happened with Perry and Merck. If I didn’t know better, I’d have to accuse you of being willfully dishonest.
Does anyone close to her work in the oil industry?
Did any of her Oil industry decisions affect them positively?
Of course, the answer is yes to both questions.
Yet it would be a very dishonest stretch to suggest a quid-pro-quo.
And THAT is my point....that EVERY contribution to EVERY politician can be considered a bribe, in that the contributor is expecting something in return.
They are all whores, thus the appellation "second oldest profession".
Perry is the poster child for Crony Capitalism, next to Obama.
We need a better candidate.
I just wish she would run.

The glaring generalities you have produced aren’t in the least bit convincing.
Perry received donations from Merck. He had meetings with Merck. His former chief of staff was a lobbyist for Gardasil. His chief of staff at the time was the mother-in-law of the state rep who was the Texas chair of a group called Women in Government that Merck used to funnel money into states all over the country. Perry mandated the use of a Merck product through executive order.
I defy you to find anything approaching this with Palin or really any other candidate in the GOP field.
And by the way, here’s a completely unrelated issue of blatant cronyism from Perry:

And let me remind you that we haven’t even gotten started on all the shenanigans behind the Trans Texas Corridor debacle.

I am so glad you have volunteered to help me interview the Mafia killers who still need to be contacted, because you are sooooo brave.
Epolito (in jail in Arizona for killing up to ten people as a bad New York Cop)
Anthony “the animal” Fiato, mob hitman now in witness protection
Terry Gordon, las vegas porn king who had his car blown up
Dave M - indicted for killing two wives and two other males, shooting one in the balls
Gerald Burgess - who either murdered a 7 year old, or was set up by the mob.
Oscar Goodman, famous mob lawyer/mayor
Joe Conforte, famous pimp now in Brazil still pimping underage girls
David Burgess - doing jail time for child porn after running the Mustang ranch brothel
The list is longer than this, but you get the idea. There are some vindictive Vegas connected billionaires I left out.
I’m glad you pointed out that I am a drama queen, because now you can prove it by interviewing some of these people for me. Make sure to leave your name and phone number with them so you are traceable, it is no big deal after all.
I am sure glad I found a sucker - I mean brave person who is willing to take the heat for me. Glad to know you.
Governors group is Perry’s largest donor
Cool. It will be the states that slay the out of control federal government’s appetite for power.
You profess to be a writer/journalist, covering crime/corruption.
I'm just curious....are you the first...ever? If not, how were all the others killed without it making it into the press, 'cuz it would seem to be in their best interest to cover such a story.
Oh, and while we're at it, why is your deadly profession not listed on "worlds deadliest jobs"?
You may be good at what you do, I hope are successful, but leave the drama to others, it will only demean you.
