RUIDOSO, N.M. -- Some Ruidoso residents are upset over a mayor's recent executive order banning guns on village property. KRQE-TV reported that residents plan to voice their outrage at a city council meeting today over an order issued by Mayor Ray Alborn banning firearms from village buildings except for law enforcement. They called the order illegal.
Village officials said this ordinance was the result of a July case, when a resident at Village Hall had his gun removed by the police chief. Alborn said he took action as a protective measure.
Alborn said the village attorney assures him he has the right to make the executive order.
In 1986, New Mexico residents voted to amend the state constitution forbidding local regulation of firearms.
My home town.
He also moonlights as the village idiot.
His action violates state law
The mayor and his attorney deserve a fair trial and a nice hanging.
Exactly this. USC Title 18 Sec 241 and 242. Can carry the death penalty upon conviction.
Not my home town but we go there often. This summer there was a huge Cougar in someone’s yard near downtown. Bears room the trash cans in the early hours looking for food. We always take our gun with us when we go... and we will continue. Ruidoso is a very conservative town in NM, one of the few. This move by the Mayor is NUTS!
Can the mayor suspend freedom of religion, freedom of press, freedom to peacefully meet by Executive Order?
This is an Unconstitutional order, for which he should face censor and impeachment. He might as well issue an executive order re-instating slavery.
I still have lots of friends there, altho no family anymore (my inlaws passed away in 06). We were just in Roswell tho (literally, we got back Sunday). We usually head up that way, but were busy and didn’t head up there this time.
Anyway, this surprised me. I graduated from high school there. But, you know, they have had an influx of “others” over the years, so who knows. My Mom used to complain about the Californians moving in. Those darned Californians! ;)
I agree and many of those new comers are coming from south of El Paso.
Aspencade is sometime this month isn’t it? I used to live in Cloudcroft back in the early 80’s I’ve made the drive across the mountains through the Apache Reservation many times to Ruidoso. Used to ski there a lot. I remember a popular saying/bumper sticker/t-shirt in Ruidoso at the time was “If god wanted Texans to ski, he would have given them mountains.” I doubt that sentiment was sanctioned by the chamber of commerce.
“as a protective measure”
well that’s a soft spoken rationalization for tyranny!
BEST cherry cider in th whole world.
I’ve been one of those Texas skiers for many years. There aren’t enough New Mexicans to support the slopes. I’ve suffered some verbal abuse from locals, even though I mind my own business. Beautiful mountains, and Taos Ski Valley is world class. Broke my leg there this past Feb. We’re going to Ruidoso in October. That cougar killed a tame goat that played with some dogs around Twin Spruce campground. My sister said that cat was a big one. I heard someone shot it.
Probably.
It used to be in October, I think. Of course it didn’t used to be about motorcycles. But yes, it’s in Sept now, I believe, but it appears they’ve changed the name to the Golden Aspen Motorcycle Rally anyway. It was all about $$$. I guess that’s good for the town. When I was in high school it started being a bit of a problem since the bikers were still bad guys (I think a lot of them now are older guys with families etc so it’s probably not that kind of trouble now).
Anyway, yes, I think it’s coming up. And yes, we made fun of Texans, but and I recall that saying, but those Texans (we called them Turkeys) were our lifeblood, and heck, we dated them too! Besides, even tho I went to school there, I was born in Texas! LOL Most of the people in Ruidoso were transient anyway, it was that kind of town, as most tourist towns are. My husband’s family got there when he was in second grade (his dad was a retired Marine pilot who wanted to ranch) and so he grew up there. My Mom’s family was old time New Mexico, but my Dad was retired military too. Funny, my Mom’s family came to NM from Texas in the early 1900s. Her grandmother’s grandfather died at the Alamo. He wouldn’t be too pleased with what this Mayor in Ruidoso is doing.
