Sunday Hunting Hearing Scheduled for Thursday in Pennsylvania |

Contact members of the state House Game and Fisheries Committee This Thursday, September 15, the Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee will hold its second public hearing to consider ending the prohibition on Sunday hunting. This hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the East Allen Township Municipal Building, located at 5344 Nor-Bath Boulevard in Northampton.
The prohibition on Sunday hunting is an old blue law left on the books in only six states. Hunters pump millions of dollars into habitat restoration and conservation and they are primarily responsible for healthy ecosystems throughout Pennsylvania. Many hunters cannot introduce their children or friends to hunting because Saturday is their only opportunity, and they are competing with the numerous organized sports and other activities. Many hunters - be it young or old, novice or experienced - stop hunting because of the lack of opportunity, both in time and accessible land. The addition of an extra day in the field increases a persons available time to enjoy our hunting heritage. This will invigorate essential hunter recruitment and retention efforts.
Sunday hunting will also bring a much-needed economic boost to rural areas. Every day that hunters are in the field, they spend money on gasoline, food, lodging and the dozens of other incidentals that go along with a days hunt. The ripple effect of this spending can have a major impact on a rural town or county. Comprehensive research from the National Shooting Sports Foundation shows that allowing hunting on Sundays in Pennsylvania would generate a total annual economic impact estimated at $764 million and create more than 8,000 jobs. This legislation will clearly help advance and preserve the Keystone States rich hunting traditions, while enhancing biodiversity and wildlife populations. Please contact members of the House Game and Fisheries Committee TODAY and urge them to support Sunday hunting. Contact information for this committee can be found here. |

I’m glad they’re going to pass this, but it won’t matter during deer season. The Stillers are on Sundays.... : )
Between this and passing the Castle Doctrine, we’re really passing some good gun rights laws here in Pa.

As a landowner who allows friends to hunt, I nevertheless appreciate having one day a week when I can inspect the grounds without needing to wear blaze orange.
A lot of churches in these parts abut wooded areas too.

"No hunting on Sundays? Never heard of it here out west - unbelievable."
Its a remnant of the infamous "Blue Laws" enacted here in Pennsylvania many years ago. All of these laws revolved around morality and setting aside Sunday as the Christian sabbath day. For instance, the reason that the Steelers and Eagles both joined the NFL in 1933 is because that was the first year they repealed the blue law forbidding professional sports being played on Sundays. Some other blue laws still around, you can't have car dealerships open on Sundays or Beer distribitorships.

North Carolina just lifted the Sunday ban this year...but only for bow-hunters...which I personally think is a perfect middle ground position that satisfies hunters AND land owners.
Of course, the downside is that although I live in NC, I own land in VA...which still has the Sunday ban...can't win for losin'.

The hunting law I like the best in Pa is no hunting with semi autos. With some of these yahoos out there in the woods, I just don’t trust them. I think places like West Virginia, you’re taking your life in your hands, seriously. Besides, I just don’t think it’s sporting to be able to get off rapid fire shots on your game. One shot should be all you need. If you need more, go get some range time in. One shot, one kill. Worked in the Marine Corps, should work in hunting.

It assures me that my hubby will be home on Sunday...unless he decides to go fishing. LOL. I like the no hunting on Sunday law here in VA.

. Some other blue laws still around, you can't have car dealerships open on Sundays or Beer distribitorships. But the Commonwealth-owned "Wine and Spirits" shops open at Noon and motorcycle dealerships were recently allowed limited afternoon hours as well. Go figure.

Many hunters - be it young or old, novice or experienced - stop hunting because of the lack of opportunity, both in time and accessible land. I suspect that even more land will be posted if this passes (think 'law of unintended consequences'). As another poster noted, some folks like at least one day a week to enjoy/maintain their property in relative safety.

Oh no... y’all have my sympathies. They are destructive. Perhaps you can convince your state to take action now, before it gets worse ( they can have 3 litters a year 12x3).
