Well said Texas Mom. I was told to go back to DU because I stood up for Perry on one of the threads last night. They seem to think no one can beat Palin. Then she should get in the game and slug it out with the rest of the candidates instead of tweeting from the sidelines. If you want to be president you need to be able to make a decision for heaven’s sake. She was a VP candidate and she knows the deal. Either she’s in or not.

That someone, as Michele Bachmann pointed out, was Governor Perry's former chief of staff, who then went to work for a drug company who made the drug that would be required of the Texan government to mandate that, that our young daughters would have to be inoculated against potential disease from the company that his former chief of staff was lobbying for. That's crony capitalism.Notice that in that remark, Palin is remarking about Perry's chief of staff, not about Perry.
And there had to have been something to that whole issue because it just didn't sound like Governor Perry. Governor Perry was, you know, the proverbial anti-government type of maverick there in Texas, and yet on this issue, he decided that he was going to know better than a parent was going to know in terms of what the health care or health benefit would be for their teenage daughters. So I knew there was something to it. ... So we know. I knew even at that time something was up with that issue, and now we're finding that, yes, something was up with that issue. And it was a -- it was kind of an illustration or a big [sic, probably "bit"] of evidence of some crony capitalism.On the point of not attacking other candidates, Palin said this:

How are we ever going to reform the system and be able to restore what's good and fair and right about America unless we do hold one another accountable? That's what Michele was trying to do.

Since there was an out out clause. who would have thought people would actually WANT their children put at risk. Maybe O-care will deny treatment for this preventable disease.
As far as I know, pretty much "hands off" and allowed their Health Departments or legislatures to act.
Most States Forego Mandatory Gardasil - September 2nd, 2009
According to the Associated Press report, while 2 dozen states had considered making Gardasil mandatory for young girls, those efforts failed because of parental opposition. Reasons for such opposition are varied. Safety was obviously a big concern, and some socially conservative people worried Gardasil would promote promiscuity. Some states that considered providing Gardasil free-of-charge did not have the funding available once the economy fell into recession. Finally, many people were disturbed to hear that Merck had paid for the massive lobbying efforts that were pushing for mandatory Gardasil. Merck suspended that campaign in 2007, the Associated Press said.
Here are some facts re: gardisil debate.
Vaccines have always been a bit controversial, especially in some circles, with some people opposing them for religious reasons or because they fear an autism link.
Gardasil, the HPV vaccine that protects girls against four types of HPV, or human papillomavirus, including the two types that cause most cervical cancers and the two types that cause the most genital warts, has been especially controversial...
According to the CDC, genital HPV “is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States” and “persistent genital HPV infection can cause cervical cancer in women,” some of which can be prevented by Gardasil, the HPV vaccine.
Why all the controversy about Gardasil?
Most of it seems to revolve around that some people don’t like the idea of their child being “forced” to get a “new” vaccine that protects against an STD, especially since they don’t believe that their child is going to be sexually active...
The controversy over getting Gardasil is especially loud in Texas, where a fight to overturn the governor’s executive order mandating the HPV vaccine for all 11- or 12-year-old girls has now been successful.
Some things to think about as you consider which side of the HPV vaccine debate you are on include:
1) Choice
Even if the HPV vaccine becomes mandated in your state, you can likely opt out so that your child doesn’t get the vaccine.
Gardasil is a part of the current recommended childhood immunization schedule that is approved by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians, and most of the other vaccines in the schedule, like the tetanus shot, MMR, and hepatitis B vaccine, are already required for school.
The timing of the mandate to get the HPV vaccine was a little fast in Texas, but then most kids don’t get a vaccine until it is required for school. This was seen when the hepatitis B and chickenpox vaccine were introduced, so requiring Gardasil for school would be a good way to make sure kids quickly get protected against cervical cancer.
Still, even if it isn’t required for school, since it is on the childhood immunization schedule, it is likely that your pediatrician may recommend that your child get Gardasil starting at her 11- or 12-year-old well child visit.
Surprisingly to some parents, not all experts are in favor of HPV vaccine mandates, even those experts that are generally in favor of kids getting all of their vaccines. This is not because they believe that there is anything wrong with the new HPV vaccine. Instead, they think that the focus should be on the vaccine, and not on the mandates, and they would prefer a slower roll-out.
And some think that making the making the HPV vaccine compulsory, as Dr. Catherine D. DeAngelis states in an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association, “could have the unintended consequence of heightening parental and public apprehensions about childhood vaccinations” and can create “a backlash among parents.”
2) Necessity
Although some parents don’t think that their kids will need a vaccine that protects against a sexually transmitted disease, especially at such an early age, statistics don’t support that.
Consider that according to the CDC 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 47 percent of high school students report having had sexual intercourse, and 34 percent of sexually active students said that they didn’t use a condom the last time they had sex, which puts them at great risk for STDs such as HPV. And 34 percent of students in the ninth grade, increasing to 63 percent by 12th grade, reported having had sexual intercourse.
So some parents who think that their child isn’t sexually active are in denial about their child’s sexual activity and risk of HPV.
And even if your child isn’t sexually active and is abstinent until marriage, there is no guarantee that her partner will have been too. The CDC reports that over 14 percent of women who were 18 to 25 with only one lifetime sex partner still had HPV infections.

I remember even when it came out and Perry wasn't even involved there was discomfort about administering it to 12 y/olds. The thinking being it somehow provides a green light for sexual activity.
I seriously doubt having a vaccine is going to make a girl run out and have sex if she is not otherwise inclined and not having a vaccine will prevent premature sexual activity.
Most girls don't even know that cervical cancer can be caused by an STD only that this vaccine is one of many designed to protect them throughout their lives.
It's almost like certain commentators feel that if one is promiscuous (or monogamous with previously promiscuous partners) they deserve to get cancer.

I will admit that Perry did better last night than he did in the New Hampshire Debate. But, everyone has noticed that he is not “sure sounding” and assertive in some of his responses. He let Mitt Romney get away with some things last night that he could have nailed him on. He could have said: “You know Mitt, people had the opportunity to opt out of the vaccine, but people didn’t have the opportunity to opt out of Obomney Care”. The dude just is NOT a skilled debater. Great speaker? Yes. Great Debater? Not even close. And, if he doesn’t improve his debating skills, Obama will mop the floor with him.

In Texas, parents have the right to opt out of some or all vaccines for their children.
