The Capital Survey Research Center, which does polling for the Alabama Education Association, has surveyed Alabamians about President Barack Obama and the candidates seeking the Republican nomination.
First, the president.
Of the 841 registered voters who were polled, a majority said they did not like Obama and the direction he was taking the country. This comes as no surprise since a majority of those polled (488) said they would vote next year in the Republican primary.
In the GOP contest, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is favored by Alabamians over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, though nearly half of those polled didnt know who Perry was.
The fly in the ointment seems to be former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. She was rated unfavorable or very unfavorable by 56 percent of those polled. She also polls as the weakest candidate against Obama. But 12 percent of polled Alabamians who plan to vote in the Republican primary said they would support a Palin bid for the White House.
As polls in other states and regions have shown, Palin would take votes from Perry. With Palin in the race, 22.5 percent would support the Texas governor, 20 percent would support Romney.
But if Palin is not in the race, Perry would get the votes of nearly 30 percent of Alabama Republicans a jump of 7.5 points. Romney would gain only 4 points. About 14 percent of GOP voters were undecided, so if Romney can hold his base and attract the undecided, then Romney might pull it out. But it will be difficult.
Since a majority of those polled said they thought the country was going in the wrong direction, it was not surprising that 64 percent rated current economic conditions as poor. What is surprising is that more than 47 percent told pollsters that their personal economic condition was good or excellent, despite the pessimism about the economy. Thats possibly an indication that those polled are doing well in comparison to others they know, but they are nonetheless concerned about the future.
This early polling says several things about Alabama Republicans.
Perry is slightly on top, but he has name-recognition work to do.
Romney remains firmly in the race, but he has far to go.
Perry supporters surely hope Palin stays on the sidelines.
Any of the Republican candidates can beat Obama in Alabama, but the former Alaska governor is the weakest in the field.
Now Republicans must wait to see what Sarah Palin will do.
OMG.
“She also polls as the weakest candidate against Obama”
Provably false. If this was actually the case,, during the primary, they would be building her up as a “maverick”,, a “reformer”, etc.
Then they would attack her AFTER she had the nomination.
Instead,,they are doing everything they can to stop her from being the nominee.
Alabama is still an all boys state. That can change. It’s a southern thing...no disrespect. Lot of southern guys still think women belong in the kitchen...or ironing shirts.
I could not agree more. Sarah will rocket up after she announces and after campaigning starts she will move faster. The least surprising thing here is that so many people don’t know Perry. After they do...like this Texan they will reject him. He is a nice guy I guess. I don’t think he is evil but he is ALL talk when it comes to being conservative. He will say great things...get elected and govern just like the rest. SARAH is the only one who will do everything to get the job done. Because she is a conservative in heart.
N.B.: The Anniston Star has long had the nickname of “The Anniston Red Star”, for its wildly leftist viewpoints, even when the town was host to Fort McClellan, HQ of the US Army Military Police and Chemical Corps.
Let me make this perfectly clear. Anniston, Alabama is my home town. Unstand this, and make no doubt about it . . . the guy who runs the Anniston Star is a devoted dimocrat and Obama supporter. There is NO honesty in the Anniston Star. It is another failing newspaper. It is owned by the NY Slimes now I believe. Around here, it is called the ANNISTON RED STAR! Don’t believe a word that comes out of that communist rag!
ya forgot barefoot and pregnant.....
I just watched Palin;Undefeated on PPV. Alinsky rules are in play. The corrupt ones in DC at truly frightened of her. She should be the Republican nominee. THe peoples candidate.
No bias there...
Smoothsailing is a shill for the rino wing on the republican party...or should I say the wing/leg and thigh.
He is here to get a rino nominated again.
You’re kidding, right? Right?
she does poll that way. but she could change the polls by getting in the race, drawing huge crowds, doing well in the debates, etc.
but most polls don’t have her doing well against obama. currently, she does have high negatives with independents.
What is it you don't understand...she isn't running!
They're all looking over their shoulder for her, including and mostly Perry.
Oh how cute! You actually think polls MEASURE opinion and don’t realize that their true purpose is to create it!
Like i said, if she was unpopular, and unelectable, and the weakest candidate,,, all the polls would tell us she was the one we should put against Obama.
Instead,,,, the left, the Repub establishment types, their pollsters, and the mainstream media are *desperate* to stop her from entering the race. Wonder why??? If Obama could beat her easily, she would be pushed to the front.
I'm workin' on my old man. He's starting to come around, but doesn't think she'll run. He gets pretty much all his news from the Mobile Press Register, so ...
Of course she is,,, I know supporters of Perrito wish she wasn’t. But she most assuredly is.
