Allegations of fraud against a veteran California campaign treasurer have sent shock waves through the state’s Democratic congressional delegation, as lawmakers who used Kinde Durkee to keep track of their finances are now scrambling to find out whether their money has disappeared.
While Durkee has not been formally charged at this point, she is in jail in California and has been accused in an FBI criminal complaint of trying to defraud a state representative out of $677,000. On top of that, California Rep. Loretta Sanchez’s office tells POLITICO that her campaign account, managed by Durkee, has been virtually emptied out.

As you may have heard, my campaign treasurer, Kinde Durkee, was arrested earlier this week on charges of stealing more than $600,000 from one of her Orange County based clients.
Unfortunately, upon reviewing my campaign account, I too am a victim. Nearly all of the funds my team and I worked hard to raise this year have been wiped out.
This is a disheartening betrayal by a trusted associate. The records Durkee & Associates sent to me on a weekly basis accurately reflected our internal records -- including the amount we raised, the incoming and outgoing funds from our accounts, and our cash on hand. In reality, our accounts have but a few thousand dollars.

Assemblyman Jose Solorio today told his constituents that he fell victim to alleged mail fraud by Burbank-based Democratic campaign treasurer Kinde Durkee, writing that the FBI contacted him Friday to break the news.
According this Associated Press story, the FBI arrested Durkee Friday and she is expected at appear in court Tuesday.
Under the headline "I've Been Robbed. The FBI Has Arrested My Treasurer," Solorio, D-Santa Ana, posted the following letter today: Dear Friends, I wanted to reach out to you directly with the facts regarding the recent arrest of Kinde Durkee, the person I trusted as my campaign treasurer. I hired her because she was regarded as a highly respected professional, and for decades, the treasurer for the campaigns of many prominent elected officials in the state. Becoming apolitical for a moment, this kind of thing is why I pay all my bills either by credit card or check, never a debit card, electronic payment, or automatic payment that can be directly deducted from my checking acount. That lead-lag gives me control over the account and helps to protect against grifters like Durkee. Unfortunately, it doesn’t protect against really bad grifters like Sanchez and the Illegal.
I can’t decide if this is a trick by “Miss I can’t make my mind up if I am Caucasian or Hispanic” to steal her own money.
Sounds like a simple redistribution of wealth. I thought the democrats were all for that.
Pre- or Post-embezzlement? Somehow I find it hard to believe that Durkee could have kept her greedy hands off that $5 million in cash.

If Di-Fi campaign cash was wiped out, I am predicting she won’t run again. Just too much work to raise all that cash again in just one year.
What do you want to bet that some of the “shovel ready” cash from Stimulus III.5 will be shoveled to Sanchez to replace this loss.
