Owners Angry After Cops Shoot Dog in Backyard
NBC ^

-snip-

But Samuelson's neighbor, Fernando Perez, said he told the cops several times that Ozzy was roaming in the back.

When the security alarm system at the home went off, Samuelson called Perez to check it out while she made the 20-minute drive to her house, he said. Perez said he knew not to go into the backyard because of the dog and when officers arrived, he warned them.

"'Be careful. It’s a big dog,' I told them. They told me to go back to my house," said Perez, who repeated the warning several more times. "Before I get to my driveway, I hear the two shots. They walked into the backyard with the guns in their hand. Then they ran from the backyard like they were scared or something."

Samuelson said she got Ozzy to protect the house and deter thieves. Police have not said what triggered the alarm.

"He was our protector," Samuelson said. "He’s a huge part of our family."

Real men with clean consciences don’t run away like scared boys.

Cowards with guilty consciences do run when they know they’ve committed a crime.

Thank you. I wish I could zot, but I’m IATZ for the most part.

Besides, giving me the zot power wouldn’t be... wise. [big evil grin]

1. Dogs don’t have instant transmission. 2. A human who is running on adrenaline, who is running without hesitation, who is not going to drop and pause if he hears a growling dog, is going to be gone over the average city yard before the Nazi guard dog can stop him.

I'm still trying to figure out how any of that explains why they need to shoot this dog.

They weren't in pursuit of a perp, and so far whether there even was one is speculation.

The cops were called after the home security alarm went off. If there was a perp, and he ran through that yard he was long gone by the time they got there.

Never heard of the term. I know of seeing eye dogs, dogs for the deaf, even diabeties dogs, bomb dogs, drug dogs, sentry dogs, etc. What does a “support dog” support?

If I were younger I would.

Unfortunately my ability to leap over a 7 foot fence now requires a 4 foot step ladder. :)

It also depends on whether the criminal has learned how to not let distractions keep him from moving through.

If he pauses, due to hearing the dog, I would agree with you that he wouldn’t make it.

Not only that, but most alarm companies are in contact with the owners and the police and can tell the cops that the owner is enroute and the eta. Once the building is surrounded there isn’t a hurry. One cop on one corner looking down two sides, and one cop on the diagonal corner does the trick.

My yard isn’t anywhere near as big as y’alls but a feller would have to be jacked on some badass crack to out run my pups.

(The Pomeranian carries a little knife too.)

Good looking dogs. You need to rake your yard. Got enough hay there to feed a cow.

If you’ve read my other posts, you’d know I’m not in support of the cops in this situation.

The perp obviously wasn’t in the yard, because the dog wasn’t barking and the owner was on her way home and the procedure should be allowed to control the dog.

There was no excuse to shoot it.

Opting out is a great idea. People who don’t wish to or can’t afford to pay for fire protection get opted out by the FD. I think that we should be able to opt out of police “protection” and have a smaller tax bill. What a great idea.

The police are supposed to be the impartial eyes and ears of the impartial criminal courts. They are also supposed to keep the peace.
