Poll: Republican Leads in N.Y. Special Election

With just four days to go until voters in New York's historically Democratic 9th Congressional District go to the polls, Republican candidate Bob Turner holds a six-point lead over Democrat David Weprin, according to a new Siena Research Institute survey released Friday.

Among likely voters in the district, which comprises parts of Queens and Brooklyn, Turner (pictured) attracts 50 percent of the support while Weprin garners 44 percent. Six percent say they are undecided. The same poll taken a month ago showed Weprin with a six-point lead, indicating the race would be surprisingly close.

Turner, who has received endorsements from a couple of prominent Democrats, manages to attract support from 32 percent of Democrats. Comparatively, Weprin receives support from just 6 percent of Republicans. Turner holds a significant lead over Weprin among independents, 65 percent to 27 percent. Voters have a favorable view of Turner, 48 percent to 34 percent. They are evenly split on Weprin, 41 percent to 41 percent.

Voters in this district have soured on President Obama, and the state of the economy and unemployment weigh heavily on their minds. Obama won this district by 10 points in 2008, but his margin of victory there was much lower than in surrounding New York districts. Now, his favorability ratings are underwater, with 43 percent having a positive view of the president and 54 percent holding a negative one.

A Republican candidate actually winning in a Brooklyn-Queens congressional district-—now that really is a man bites dog story. What’s next? The Bronx?

Anthony Wiener was one of the rising stars of the Democratic party. There was talk of him going on to be governor. Maybe even President someday.

Now, the Democrats can't even hold his seat. In. New. York.

Sure, Wiener self-destructed, but apparently his district wasn't that locked to begin with. A *six point lead* four days from the election!? Tell me again how 2012 isn't going to be an electoral bloodbath for the left?

Mayor Koch is actively calling voters in this district and telling them to vote Republican because he hates Barry’s position on Israel.

He thinks that the Republican will win.

Amazing!

There are a lot of frustrated Italian and Irish families in this district (former Reagan Democrats) as well as a growing population of Polish immigrants, who tend to vote Republican.

Weprin is supposed to win this handily - if he loses or even wins by a small margin, it will be very telling.

For about a third of the voters in this district, Koch is a hero.

His voice will be heard.

A GOP win here is a tall order, but I never expected it to look this good. Hoping for a stunning win!

Too bad I don’t live in that district.
It’s is funny that Weprin, an orthodox Jew isn’t getting the support he needs from the Jews (and not all orthodox either—many conservative jews who would normally classify themselves as Democrats). People in that district had gotten sick of Weiner especially after his antics and really don’t want the same ole same ole.

There is no electorate as incurably stupid as New Yorkers. And no electorate in New York as incurably stupid as those in NYC.

Their damn hippies were demonstrating in Greenwich Village against U.S. military action when the ashes of the World Trade Center were still smoldering. I will never forget the disgust I felt at the time.

For a Pubbie to take this Congressional seat will be as big a(or perhaps bigger)a shock to the Dems as Scott Brown winning Kennedy’s Senatorial seat in MA.

The NYC Dem machine will not permit a Repub win here. They will import armies of the undead from all over NYC, Long Island, and New Jersey to prevent it. A Repub win in the face of all that would be a political earthquake of magnitude 11.0

The Dems are getting desperate. The new attack ad is that Bob Turner is going to cut SS and Medicare for the elderly. For a second I thought they were running a LBJ Vs Goldwater ad. This is my district so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Their damn hippies were demonstrating in Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village in Manhattan and Middle Village in Queens may be five miles from each other, but culturally they are a thousand miles apart.

More people live in NYC than live in most states - and most of the hipsters grew up in Kansas and Alabama and other, redder areas.

99% of New Yorkers are not addicted to getting their faces on the news.

Off topic but of interest here. Joe Crowley, Queens cong. and county leader, who handpicked Weprin for the seat is the cousin of the late FDNY Battalion Chief John Moran. Known to all Freepers as BC Moran until his murder by al queda on 9/11/01.

Let’s just wait for such a rosy scenario. Dems have a way of pulling these things out.
