Rick Perry: Because of the Texas fires, I’m not sure I’ll make the debate tomorrow night

A thousand homes and 100,000 acres have burned in just a week. A friend of mine who lives just outside Austin was forced to flee with her family last night as the flames encroached, and not until this afternoon did she learn whether her home had survived. (It had.) Go figure that this guy thinks he should do his job rather than gladhand people on the trail for a few days.

Presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he does not yet know whether he will attend Wednesday night’s Republican presidential debate…

“I don’t know. That’s a fluid situation at the moment. Again I go back to we’re going to be taking care of the folks here … We’re really focused on the events at hand and the other side of that is we’re pretty good at multitasking,” said Perry on CBS’s “The Early Show” Tuesday…

“This is not the time to be talking about politics. There’s another 14 months ahead to talk politics. Right now I’m substantially more focused on making sure that these people … folks all across this state are being taken care of. Getting out of harms way, saving lives is the big issue for me right now,” Perry told CBS.

Serious question: Is there a single person whining at him for missing DeMint’s forum who wouldn’t also be whining if he had attended the forum that he had shirked his duties as governor?

“It’s obvious that Rick Perry is skipping the DeMint forum because he knew he was going to be asked tough questions about his previous support for gay marriage in New York, as well as his policies in Texas in favor of illegal immigration,” says one representative of a rival camp. “He’s looking for a reason to not actually be compared to the other candidates,” says an official in another camp. “He was grasping for a reason not to show.”

There are eight more debates scheduled before the Iowa caucuses, three of which will be held within the next 15 days. Plenty of opportunities left to quiz him about immigration, an issue on which he is in fact very vulnerable, and on gay marriage and the Tenth Amendment, which won’t hurt him at all given his appeal to evangelical leaders. Ultimately he’s the only one who suffers from having to miss these things since every absence gives Romney and Bachmann a chance to shine unhindered and to attack him without fear of retort. They may have no choice tomorrow night: According to NBC’s new poll, Perry leads Romney by fully 15 points, 38/23, with Bachmann a distant fourth (behind Ron Paul) at eight percent.

I’ve counted at least 5-6 other posts that have corrected you as well.

Lol, some of you folks who become so enamored of a candidate are just too,too much. What you have seen is 5-6 other posts from people who will try to justify anything Perry does or doesn't do, and has or hasn't done.

Gov. Perry should be in Texas making the executive decisions that will save lives and property.

Well, some are now saying he's going to the debate. If he does go, will you consider him to be an irresponsible governor who puts his personal ambitions above the well being of the people of Texas?

Are the voices inside your head arguing with each other?

I hate it when that happens.

Is he on the bucket brigade?

What can he do that can't be done from the debate site?

This is too McCain for me.

If it is so imperative that any potential candidate be at this debate, then why won't Sarah Palin be there? I've never witnessed or heard from her when she is running for an executive position, and I'm interested to hear how she stacks up against others in the GOP field. Sure, she's giving speeches, and those speeches are basically red meat for conservatives, yet there are very few specifics in those speeches. The biggest story from her speeches this weekend is that she “isn't for sale”. If that's her primary message to get this country back on track, I find it lacking and a bit insulting to me as a voter.

Bless your heart.

Now that right there made me laugh.

To the rest of the partisans, please... Pray for Texas. It doesn't matter who you support, or how snarky the original article was, there's good folks hurting in the Lone Star State. I favor Palin, but support Perry's decision whatever it is. He's a capable chief executive.

katrina syndrome? If our leaders are not on the ground and appear ready to throw sand bags, or in this case fight the fire first hand, they appear insensitive?

Obama was at command center ready to get in a street fight with Irene in order to appear competent.

As a Texan, I submit to you that you do not understand the intensity of these fires that are still out of control.

What does being a Texan have to do with someone understanding how intense a fire is?

Yes.

What if Bush went about his daily schedule after 9/11? I know that’s an extreme example, but you get the point.

What if Ray Nagin and Gov. Blanco went about with some less important task after Katrina?

For Perry to attend the debate while wildfires are uncontained would be like Obama voting “Present” all the years he was phoning it in while a Senator.

>>Smart move. He would do himself harm if he did make the debates. <<

Plus they would probably have some pesky “questions” and stuff. ;-)

I’d prefer her to sit or get off the pot.

Right now she’s out and unless you’re on her campaign, I really don’t see why we should speculate on Palin.

Upthread - and other threads - I’ve posted that I was evacuated from the Bastrop fires.

I was at Bastrop State Park when the first responders arrived. I was at “Ground Zero”, if you please.

I’m not going to elaborate with you, but trust me. I have been affected by what happened to me Sunday.

But that’s just me. Let’s all get back to bashing Perry for attending/not attending the debates, shall we?

I’ll retract the “insulting” portion because I hope Sarah offers specifics if she does enter the race.

As a non-candidate at this point, technically she can’t insult me as a voter, and the red meat applause lines are easy to say when you don’t have to back them up with ideas. If she has these same speeches after she (possibly) declares, then she would basically be the right’s version of Obama, and Obama insulted me as a voter. So, you’re correct, and I’m not insulted that you made me reconsider my words.

Now I understand why Sarah hasn’t announced - she’s afraid to debate her fellow Republicans.

Thanks for enlightening me.

My disinterest in Perry does not stem from this incident, I actually agree with it, but right now I’m hoping for Herman Cain. I don’t respond to FR trash talk, but I’m interested to see which cabal bashes my post. The Perrybots or the Sarabots? Perhaps the Bacmanites?
Some of the candidate rhetoric of late of FR reminds me of why the GOP is always limping from the self inflicted gunshot wound..
Remember the Rudibots?
