A Closer Look at the Houston Shuttle Snub
KTRK Houston ^

Posted on 09/05/2011 5:45:53 PM PDT by kelsiejackson

These days NASA is dismantling the once great shuttles, getting them ready to hang in museums all over the country -- except in the one museum many of us Houstonians think it should be.

According to NASA, the actual #4 on the list who ‘missed it by THAT much’...was SEATTLE.

Seems the Museum of Flight’s credentials and visitor number weren’t QUITE up to snuff. Even so, we got one of the full-size, walk-through Shuttle mockups.

By the same logic - the 9-11 memorial will be placed in Orlando, or Washington DC.

Since the deciding issue is visitor traffic - we should be consistent.

Everyone knows this is just Obama and Dem politics al lthe time 24-7.

He is a joke - and anyone who votes for him is a traitor. First time around - being stupid is excused. But no one can claim ignorance now.

They can friggin rearrange it so Texas got one of the working shuttles. I was only pointing out that New York has no ties to the shuttle.

It is an emotional issue for many Texans and you don’t think that is important. Fine. For us it is and the reason why one of those birds deserves to be with the people who love it not stare at it like another piece of machinery. IT MEANS SOMETHING HERE.

This is important to us TEXANS. Maybe its just friggin knee jerk to you. Then get off this thread and post on something you feel passionately about. In the meantime, we have the right and the will to ask questions and demand answers.

One of the heights of my professional career was to be working as an engineer at NASA in Houston during the height of the Shuttle program, and to see the movie “The Right Stuff” on opening night in Clear Lake, in an audience filled with my wonderful and amazing co-workers.

I agree with you, I hope you did not read into my message I believed the shuttle should be going to NY...frankly I would not send a cent in money or property to that pisspot.

That move was a slap in the face of all Texans and all the red states in general. This guy is the most devisive force in the US since the Nazi Bunds of the late 30’s. He cannot get tossed out of office soon enough for me which means he can take his racist, anti capitalists, and pro socialists with him. My only hope is he ends up in jail sometime in the future where he should be sent to some hell hole for incarceration.

Where should it be and why?

Cape Canaveral, FL, for obvious reasons. And government installations like this should NEVER be located where they are because the Senate Majority Leader comes from that State.

If it helps the Enterprise sent to NYC is not an actual shuttle. It was simply a stripped down prototype for gliding tests off a 747.

Ahem. Enterprise IS an "actual shuttle". She's a twin of Columbia (the shuttles had differences between them, with Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour being near-twins as well), and contains an enormous amount of space-rated hardware, including her airframe, payload-bay doors, landing gear, etc. What she doesn't contain are a flight-worthy TPS, crew cabin and a lot of the plumbing.

After the ALT series a decision was made to build up STA-99 (static test article #99) into OV-099 Challenger. The main reason for this was that it was easier/cheaper to build up STA-99 than it was to complete Enterprise's fit-out for spaceflight. However, for years there have been unsubstantiated rumors that Enterprise suffered costly structural damage when Fred Haise bounced her down Edwards' runway on ALT-5.

After Challenger was lost, consideration was again given to upgrading Enterprise to flight status. The reason she lost out again was similar - NASA had purchased a set of orbiter "structural spares" that could be completed into a new shuttle (Endeavour) faster and cheaper than upgrading Enterprise. AND it kept Enterprise waiting in the wings if there was ever a need for an additional shuttle ...

They put it on the Intrepid because of all the locations it is the one that likely will vote democrat next election.

It should be noted that Chuck Schumer announced (via press release) Enterprise going to Intrepid 45 minutes to an hour prior to the NASA news conference.

I’m sure Obama would say Texas already got its shuttle: Columbia.

Please! Have you ever been there? Even now? Or when you had to turn right at "Bishop's Gulf Station"?

This was laid out in the 50’s, sure there is plenty of wide open land, hence the launch location. Nothing else there though. Florida couldn’t then or now supply the technical folks in numbers like Houston or Pasadena Ca or Huntsville AL> Give Johnson credit, he saw Floriduh for what it is a long time ago

Yeah. I'll give Johnson credit, just like I give Tip O'Neill credit for bringing jet engine production to Lynn, Massachusetts. (Except that O'Neill just benefited a business in Lynn. He didn't create a huge new government bureaucracy.)

Johnson didn’t create NASA. So what, that he got mission control in his home state, big deal. It doesn’t belong at the cape. You could probably come up with some locations that would have been just as good as rural Harris county was at the time, the Cape wouldn’t be one of them. The Harris County site had a soon to be decommissioned Air Force base nearly next door for the use as training facilities, a huge work force available, and the Senate majority leader. No advantage to having mission control at the Cape, it’s just as far from the moon as anywhere else on Earth

Sorry. You seem to forget the "mission control" was at or near the "the cape" for the initial manned missions. Your beloved Lyndon Baines Johnson was a monster. It would be best for the United States if every initiative he took were undone including the 100 building "communications" facility in Houston.

Never said a word about loving LBJ (you are using lib tactics there) JSC is much more than a communications center. It is the main training center for our astronauts. Get your facts straight, or should I say get some facts to begin with

You’re wrong on that one too. It was actually on Telephone Rd near Hobby Airport at the time. I’ll send you some links if you wish

A link that shows what was actually going on at the time. NASA in Houston was much more than communications from the get go. Don’t let your hatred of LBJ blind you. I haven’t

This still isn't the Soviet Union, Pal.

Go have another drink or a dozen. You aren't even making a coherent argument. Ad hominem attacks are the weakest comebacks ever. But if that's all you have, I guess you go with it lib
