NEW YORK -- Former Giants running back Tiki Barber was said to be "devastated" that no NFL team expressed an interest in him following his return as a 36-year-old free agent, Sports Illustrated reports.

Barber, who led the NFL's backs in rushing-receiving yards in his final three pro seasons, filed papers in March to come out of retirement and was officially removed from the Giants retired list in late July.

I used to think of Barber as one of the 'good guys'. His appearances on TV and radio led me to believe that he had a future in conservative politics.

...BUT, it seems he's victim of Adam's curse

"He reportedly got engaged last month to his girlfriend Traci Lynn Johnson, the 24-year-old former NBC intern for whom Barber left his wife, Ginny Barber, in 2009 when she was pregnant with twins.

His divorce is pending in the Manhattan Supreme Court, where the couple has bitterly battled over money issues."

That is what you get when you are a big freaking a-hole. Now he needs money and thinks he can just go back. I hope no one is shedding a tear for him. His wife is going to take him to the cleaners, and then how long will that intern be sticking around?

Well, he’s 36...he can’t expect to just walk right into the Arena Football League and dominate. :)

He quit the Giants and trashed Tom Coughlin. The Giants went on to win a Superbowl. He is not the smartest of decision-makers.

The teams probably noticed that during the first year of Tiki’s surprise retirement, Tiki was trashing his former teammates while they were winning more games and ended the first year of Tiki’s absence as Super Bowl champs.

Tiki was once a fan favorite and pet to the late Wellington Mara owner of the NY Giants. Tiki publicly blasted couch Tom Coughlin and QB Eli Manning his last year. Then the Giants won the Super Bowl without him. Tiki retired too early and let his ego lead him astray plus he was not all that good as a TV sports analyst. Twin brother Ronde has the better sense of the 2. If Tiki keeps in shape he may get a slim chance in a backup role for a team with multiple injuries to their running backs. Otherwise Tiki is SOL.

That occurs to me too. A 36 year old is an old man in the sports world, and teams prefer to build for the future with younger players who can contribute for a period of years.

Barber is a despicable creep and should be ‘snubbed’ by the civil society.

Tiki and Ronde are identical twins but how is it that Ronde has more sense?

Ronde it appears has made the better decision to continue playing longer than Tiki and has kept his personal life out of the news. Less drama seems to make better sense IMHO.

That’s strange. Twins are exactly the same and they grew up in the same environment and yet one makes better decisions than the other?

He’s a 36 year old running back that retired years ago. Most runningbacks decline when they hit 30. Why would he expect anyone to want a 36 year old who hasn’t even been in the game for years to play that position unless they are desperate.

When he retired runningbacks were highly valued but the system has changed since then. He hasn’t accepted times are different.

If he needs money and he shouldn’t need money if he had manged his life well...go get a real job. Or sale off jersey’s or take speaking engagement for small towns...anything else but get over the idea of being a premier runnungback again.

Isn’t the story a bit premature? As I understood it, due to salary caps and a requirement to guarantee a full years pay to anyone on the roster on opening day, next Monday is the start of when we’ll see guys like Tiki being signed.

"Or sale off jersey’s or take speaking engagement for small towns...anything else but get over the idea of being a premier running back again."

I played in a celebrity fundraiser golf tournament a while ago. There were a dozen, or more former NFL stars who would play two or three holes with each foursome, then wait at the tee box for another group to join up with. In the course of the round the participants got to play with all of the former greats, have pictures taken, get autographs, etc.

At the BBQ I was talking with former all star MacArthur Lane who told me he plays in similar events all over the place (sometimes two or more a week in the summer) and makes as much money as he did getting beaten up playing football in the 70s. The get paid to participate and make some percentage on autographed pictures, autographed jerseys etc. He had a trunk full of replica jerseys and classic photos from different memorable games, teams, etc.
