Texas governor Rick Perry's previous support of Democrats was dismissed as irrelevant by aTea Party leader, in a sign that the rapidly rising Republican frontrunner for president is gaining allies despite questions about his record.
"We know people change. Reagan was a Democrat," said Mr DeMint on ABC's "This Week with Christiane Amanpour". "I want to give ... [all of the candidates] a little room to change. I know I've changed some positions I had 10 years ago, because the country's in a very different situation. So I'm going to listen and look and do my homework. And I'm not counting any of them out at this point."

If you are not for Palin then all converative credentials are cast aside on this site.
Cheney (a chauvanist, retread), DeMint (a Romney loving Rino and establishment type), Perry (amnesty king).
Either you back the half term, book selling, reality TV show making, never-ending bus tour driving, TV commentator and movie star of a governor.....or you are not a conservative.
Cheney has done more for this country than anyone of these candidates, or non-candidates. DeMint has been at odds with McCain, McConnell and the establishment since he hit the Senate and was the driving force behind ‘cut, cap and balance.’ Perry has kept Texas out of the economic downturn and runs the state that passed one the most harshest tort reform bills in recent memory.
But they’re not Palin so no prayer threads for them.......
Personally I do not like the effect that DeMint has had on GOP Presidential politics, DeMint was a Party Chairman in 2008 for a presidential candidate after serving on that candidates exploratory committee.
He did a lot more than just endorse Mitt Romney, he helped persuade him to run back in 2006.
DeMint was one of the early promoters of Mitt Romney to run in 2007, he was senior advisor to his exploratory committee.

If asked about Mitt on CBS I would say that at least he is much better than Obama,
If asked about, say, Sarah Palin,I could be completely honest and state that she is simply the best.
If asked about Rick Perry, I too would defend him to the liberal media. But here in the house amongst family, we can fight it out and leave the Leftist outsiders outside.
So DeMint went from being a Romney insider to an authentic tea party guy.
And he was lucky enough to become a tea party guy just as the tea party was becoming politically popular!
I probably shouldn’t base my opinion of DeMint on his public comments alone.
I assume Palin is not part of the establishment, however, who knows how long she would be entrenched if given the opportunity. Does this have to do with the length of time in office?
What I love is when someone with a 2006 join date calls people like us "trolls."

You really want to declare Reagan a "Red" in an effort to promote Rick Perry, the man who was fighting to replace President Reagan with a President Al Gore 4 years after Reagan had carried Texas with 64% of the vote, and 40 years after Reagan had voted for his last Democrat presidential candidate?

You are actually doing the Dems’ job for them, by trying to destroy the only viable candidate who can beat Obama. That’s what Obama wants to see, defeat Perry in the primaries, he can beat anyone else easily.
The primary is not about “who is the one you want to have dinner with the most” — it’s about who is the best conservative WHO CAN BEAT OBAMA.

Perry vs Obama : 44 to 45.5
Palin vs. Obama : 38.3 vs. 51.5 Obama is beating her by a larger margin than he is beating Ron Paul.

Governor Palin has many years in Republican politics, almost 20 years total, during about 14 of those years she has held various political offices she has always maintained her outsider/reformist reputation.
This is the first time since Reagan's, pre-presidential years that we have the GOP establishment so united against a major Republican candidate.
What major Republican candidate? If you’re talking about Palin, she’s not a candidate.
So, let’s suppose that by some miracle Palin is elected president. Then all the Dems have to do is file a bunch of frivolous lawsuits against her and she’ll quit again, “for the good of the country and her pocketbook”.
In view of the conversations here and in the political world, we can say that she is not a declared candidate.
We can still correct your lack of knowledge about the length of her political career and her 20 year opportunity to join the good old boys of the political establishment if she had been inclined to.
I don’t know the legal issues about that, but to fight the left, the media, the Democrats, and the GOP establishment all at the same time, it is sure easier to fight from the presidency than it is to try and remain viable while being cut off in Hawaii, or Alaska while the national liberal machinery destroys your future in the lower 48.
Reagan was a socialist-leaning union activist before he literally saw the light -- exposing the fallacy of his own well-intended work. He became the greatest Conservative leader of the last century, precisely because he was so convinced of the rightness of Conservative values and principles.
I point that out to counter the "Perry was a Democrat" arguments by people who do not understand Southern local and state politics prior to the 1994 Revolution. In 1988, Perry supported the most conservative Presidential candidate his party had at the time -- Al Gore. That was back when Ted Kennedy held the Left anchor, and Al and Tipper were campaigning against the Cultural Left. Algore was a fraud as we all know, but that was the situation in 1988 in much of the South.
I'll take Perry's 10-year record as Texas governor in a heartbeat. When Sarah Palin endorses him, I suspect a lot more Republicans will, too...
