MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.
Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.
The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

Okay, I’m convinced. A fence won’t work.
So how about a moat filled with crocodiles instead?
Hmmm....raising left eyebrow...
He'll oppose anything which gets in the way of his Corporate plans for his border and the deals made with Mexico for it. He'll clamor more and more about 'securing' it from the Drug warfare that interefers with those plans but he'll never speak of a closed border....too much to loose for his state and the cheap labor from the south.
I just plan to run across the Northern border to Canada and tell them that they have to give me everything they give their citizens. That’ll work, right?
Thank goodness!
We like to ride our sleds up into Quebec in the winter!
Israel's experience begs to differ.
Excellent point! In fact, case closed.
My biggest stumbling block with Perry. Here in Texas, back during the ‘06 election, he started talking all tough on border issues. I thought he finally “got it,” and went ahead and again voted for him. But after winning the election, he dropped the matter entirely. Really, really burned me. He’s admittedly done some good things (tort reform, social issues, EPA battling, etc.). But damn, I just don’t have any “trust” in him. He talks big and tough when elections approach, but that’s it.
It constantly hits home when I keep reading these incidents of carnage on the highways courtesy the illegals, like that recent incident in Brenham, which snuffed out four lives. Just a few months ago, my friend and neighbor’s sister-in-law and toddler son were killed by a drunk illegal. A few blocks away, an honor student was mowed down by two illegals fleeing after robbing a convenience store. That was not far from where yet another drunk illegal killed a mother and daughter coming home from church.
These things get me so angry and furious, I can’t even manage to speak. It’s hard if not impossible to try to compartmentalize these things when I see Rick Perry out and about, and recognize his complicity in all this.
Got a link for that? Because I pray you are correct.
Mexico should build the fence. No fence, no more guns.
That's an incomplete understanding. They don't allow foreign ownership of property a certain distance from the coastlines. If I wanted to buy property in Hermosillo, Sonora, I could. But I'd never do that because I don't trust them to allow me to keep it in the future. I'm a bit concerned about Democrats here, come to think of it.
That fence also kept the people in too. Those who braved to taste freedom were shot on the spot.
If Perry had said that money spent on a fence would be better spent on quicker deportations, mandatory employment checks and severe punishments for businesses hiring illegals then I would listen too him. However he has been on the wrong side of the whole immigration issue, just as Romney has been on the socialized medicine issue. I don't see voting for either in the primary and I'm not thrilled with either of them being the nominee against Obama. Unfortunately it looks like that is the way things are going now.
I’m utterly, deadly serious about land mines. You need some warning signs. Word will spread quickly.
A real conservative would recognize what is happening, and a conservative politician should be screaming it from the mountain tops.
If there are 30 million illegals in America, that’s enough to populate more than 50 congressional districts. The illegals don’t even need to vote to create whole new districts. They only need to be counted.
Think about how much better off America would be without those illegitimate districts, the added tax burden, and stress on infrastructure.
A vote for Amnesty is a vote for a permanent democrat majority.
Forget about fences, let's talk walls. If China can build a wall 5500 miles long, why can't we? How long is our land border with Mexico anyway? - series question, I really don't know.
He had his state file an Amicus brief supporting Arizona’s law, so you are quite incorrect.
He didn’t want the same law in Texas. You should get your attacks straight.
Fence or military with live rounds.
Pick one, Perry.
That's probably not the image America is looking for, but it does highlight the hypocrisy of the Mexican government when we look at controlling our border. They think nothing of gunning people down to protect their own interests.
Yah, keep slapping U.S. citizens in the face, that’s the way to win. /S
