Fox News Poll: Perry Overtakes Romney as Top GOP 2012 Pick; Most Say Palin Should Stay Out of Race By Dana Blanton September 01, 2011 | Even as Texas Gov. Rick Perry moves into the lead as Republican voters’ preferred presidential candidate, a Fox News poll released Thursday shows that voters are more likely to view him as “too extreme” than former frontrunner Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney.

Even as Texas Gov. Rick Perry moves into the lead as Republican voters’ preferred presidential candidate, a Fox News poll released Thursday shows that voters are more likely to view him as “too extreme” than former frontrunner Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney.

In addition, most American voters -- including a majority of Republicans -- think former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin should stay out of the presidential race. Perry receives the support of 26 percent of GOP primary voters in the new poll. That’s up from 13 percent in early August and enough to edge out Romney as frontrunner. Currently Romney captures 18 percent, down from 21 percent (August 7-9).

No other candidate garners double-digit support.

Palin receives 8 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul comes in at 7 percent. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann captures the backing of 4 percent, down from a high of 11 percent in late June. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and businessman Herman Cain also garner 4 percent each. Another 4 percent support former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, even though he has said he is not running and his name wasn’t included in the question. Giuliani and Palin are unannounced.

Reagan declared his run Nov 13, 1979.

Reagan did not formally announce until then, but he was campaigning and organizing long before that:

"Although he did not formally declare his candidacy until November 1979, Reagan made it clear to his inner circle from the moment of the 1976 convention that he intended to again seek the presidency. "

Reagan had an experienced campaign staff and an established fundraising machine:

"By the time Reagan began his campaign for the 1980 Republican presidential nomination, conservatives were the beneficiaries of a remarkable communications and fund-raising organization, developed originally by conservative activist Richard Viguerie from a list of twelve thousand Goldwater contributors and expanded to more than 4 million contributors and 15 million names by the mid-1970s. "

So while your post is technically true, it is also irrelevant as it pertains to Palin.

Why does she has to announce this weekend? She has EXTREMELY devoted followers, who will give her lots of money, time and effort so organization and money won’t be a problem for her to run a gonzo campaign. Plus she has already been vetted by the press, so there won’t be any surprsises, unlike Perry, Bachmann, Romeny. There is 6 months before for the first primary so If I was her, I would not announce until the last moment.. Let the other canidates beat each other up along with the press..If you are going to run a rogue outside the establishmnent campaign, this would be my strategy.

Nope. But you and left hope that's true.

I found this the other day and posted it several times. It has now been removed but exists in Wayback.

http://web.archive.org/web/20110220171234/http://www.polyconomics.com/essays/esy-791126.htm

The Reagan strategy of staying out of the Republican campaign until November 13 successfully neutralized potential primary threats from Jerry Ford and Jack Kemp. Ford, Reagan's most serious contender, was pushed into making his formal announcement not to run by other contenders who needed Ford's supporters in their own campaigns. And Kemp was brought into the Reagan camp as "chief spokesman" and Chairman for Policy Development.

For most of 1979, several Republican candidates have appeared to be running for their party's 1980 presidential nomination. They've really been jogging in small circles, limbering up, waiting for Ronald Reagan to show up. "The race usually can't start until the front-runner lets it," Reagan's campaign manager, John P. Sears, told a reporter last summer. Sears, at 38 the premiere political strategist in the U.S., was in no hurry to let the campaign begin early, and once again he confounded conventional wisdom

I’m not a Perry supporter. But I don’t mind those who are. It’s early yet.

Being a Miami Dolphins fan, I am Chad Henne supporter (because he happens to be the best we have right now) until a better QB comes along. Chad Henne will then get thrown under the bus.

If the Kyle Orton trade had gone through, Henne would already be under the bus.

There are lots of weaknesses in Perry, but, so far, he is the strongest conservative candidate we have against Obama.

If a better conservative THAT CAN ACTUALLY DEFEAT Obama shows up, I will support that candidate over Perry.

Deadline reality being what is, however, I do not see any other such candidates showing up for the fight.

Reality is often not exciting and is never flawless but perfect fantasies about Dan Marino showing up as QB some day do not win you the ball game.

We haven't reached a deadline yet. But the press is sure whipping people into a frenzy pretending that we have. This deadline meme is press driven and so many fall for it.

Very good. You made my point for me. Reagan was able to set the tempo of his announcement because he had an experienced and established campaign and fundraising machine, and he was the presumptive frontrunner. None of those traits apply to Sarah.

You have no idea what she’s doing and are making assumptions. That’s ok. You can. But assumptions aren’t facts.

When I say "deadlines", I am not talking about Labor Day. The first "drop dead" deadlines that is coming up is October 31 (Florida primary filing deadline).

However, declaring is only the last step of an entry into the race. Before that, the money men have to be lined up, the most competent campaign managers and staff have to be lined up, etc. Perry spent months doing that before actually declaring.

Yes, we have a couple of months before the "drop dead" dates but I just do not see any strong conservative candidate on the horizon doing the logistics required to run a successful campaign and win.

Some posters keep bringing up the fact that Reagan declared in November but Ronald Reagan already had a powerful, professional, well organized political machine in place long before he declared. That was also back before the Internet was invented and back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. We live in a totally different world now. In the 24 hour news cycle/Internet world of today everything is on "Fast Forward".

As far as the Palin campaign infrastructure (or the complete lack thereof), her supporters brag that she does not need one because her grassroots supporters do not need those "Establishment professionals".

So, what happened the last few days?

A probably well-intentioned amateur, that Crow fellow, does the best he knows how, naively makes a few mistakes, then the long knives come out for him and he is viciously attacked for "sabotaging" Palin and accused of being a operative for an enemy camp, etc.

You can't have it both ways. You can't say that you do not need professionals and then attack your well-meaning amateurs for not being professional.

Phony "Trump campaigns" and "Newt Gingrich campaigns" for media attention are a totally different animal. Anybody can jump in at any time and clown around in front of the TV cameras without any professional staff at all. That's fine. As long as everybody realizes that such a candidate is running to seek media celebrity and not running to win.

This is all part of her unconventional strategy to stay out of the race until <10% want her to run, then she will jump in at the last minute and sweep all the others out of the way walking into the WH.

Cheese-cake photo time, this is one of my favorites of her:

I’m actually good with that. Not voting for a guy that wants amnesty, path to citizenship, et. al.

That’s the lowest of the low bars. It’s the first thing you do before you can begin to fix the jobs problem, since the next thing you’ll do is let the oil and mineral interests start making the US energy independent by 2016.

If Perry wants amnesty, then put him in the pile of misfit toys along with the Romoid with the Masscare problem, Gingrich and the Angry Ego, etc.

I’m not looking for ideological purity here. A basic understanding of the concept of sovereignty and how it impacts the economics of entitlement reform and job creation would is somehow more than we can hope for from the GOP.

They wonder why there’s a Tea Party.

No wonder the press is praying we pick Perry and not Palin.

Can’t tell you how mad I was finding out about that tonight.

Like most candidates who step up they have their "strength" in their newness....you know... their moment as Perry does now. Like Backman that will fade as others step up in due time.

But since it's pretty much been stated over and over again that "anyone" could run against Obama and win then why not choose the best conservative there is? Just seems to me too many are falling all over themselves with whatever candidate is the latest out of the gate.

“Hey, if the borders aren’t closed and ammnesty flys we may just as well hang it up anyway.....IMO.”

Precisely!

Seriously, we should just inform anyone PRETENDING to be a conservative that if you can’t get immigration right, then you really are a liberal and you should just feel good about the new GM Volt you’ve been secretly praying for all this time.

Perry looked promising too. Eagle Scout, pilot. Decent job running Texas. Been a politician too long and has the nads to run down career politicians, which sort of raised the eyebrows.

Then I learn about the Texas DREAM act. Romney gave us Obamacare. Nixon gave us the EPA. McCain gave us Obama.

I’m not going to vote for Perry if he can’t grasp the economics of immigration. It’s a basic requirement for the office. We aren’t running a club, we are running a country.

I can assure you that Guatemalans are not streaming across the southern border of Mexico at this time.

Obama is weak now, but the election is a long way off. The media will invert gravity, bend light, and otherwise defy as much physics as they need to to put Obama on top. The entire deck will be swapped out for 52 race cards. You'll see it so often you'll think it's a Vegas magic act.

Whatever candidate we bring can't be a lightweight. They've lost the House, the Senate is vulnerable, and their 40 year reign dropped to 40 months. The left hates him right now, but push comes to shove, they'll fight to the death over Obama.

Perry's not the only candidate that *can* beat Obama, but he's got some massive structural advantages over him and the other Republicans running. It's easy on FR to think that supporting Al Gore in 1988 is some kind of massive dealbreaker, but 95% of the electorate couldn't give a rip. He might be 'new' to some people, but he's no 'flavor of the week'. He's clearly a veteran politician with a solid, unbroken winning streak behind him.

Casual voters are going to look at the fact that he's a governor of 25 million people on his fourth term, and that his state's doing well. They're also going to look at his aggressive attacks on Obama, and think, 'This guy is a fighter'. At the level that most of the electorate functions at, Perry's easily the best anti-Obama weapon we have.

A lot of the local favorites like Cain, Bachmann and Santorum aren't viable candidates. There's no historical evidence to show they have a prayer at anything more than a VP slot. America elects governors, generals and Vice Presidents, and very occasionally Senators. After the horrific mistake liberals and independents realize they made with the lightweight, untested Obama, they'll be looking for a thicker resume this time. There's just no way to sell independents on a Biden-esque gaffette whose husband told her to become a tax attorney while he prays the gay away, or a businessman with zero political experience.

Good conservatives, yes. Serious Presidential candidates, no.

The only heavyweights in the running (thus far) are Romney and Perry. They've got the cash, they've got the resumes, and they've got the infrastructure. Unless someone else of their stature jumps in, it's pretty clear where this race is heading.
