Fox News Poll: Perry Overtakes Romney as Top GOP 2012 Pick; Most Say Palin Should Stay Out of Race By Dana Blanton September 01, 2011 | Even as Texas Gov. Rick Perry moves into the lead as Republican voters’ preferred presidential candidate, a Fox News poll released Thursday shows that voters are more likely to view him as “too extreme” than former frontrunner Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney.

Even as Texas Gov. Rick Perry moves into the lead as Republican voters’ preferred presidential candidate, a Fox News poll released Thursday shows that voters are more likely to view him as “too extreme” than former frontrunner Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney.

In addition, most American voters -- including a majority of Republicans -- think former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin should stay out of the presidential race. Perry receives the support of 26 percent of GOP primary voters in the new poll. That’s up from 13 percent in early August and enough to edge out Romney as frontrunner. Currently Romney captures 18 percent, down from 21 percent (August 7-9).

No other candidate garners double-digit support.

Palin receives 8 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul comes in at 7 percent. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann captures the backing of 4 percent, down from a high of 11 percent in late June. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and businessman Herman Cain also garner 4 percent each. Another 4 percent support former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, even though he has said he is not running and his name wasn’t included in the question. Giuliani and Palin are unannounced.

3...2...1 until the usual suspects jump in a agree with the poll (for their ‘guy’s’ sake).

If she doesn’t announce on the 4th, I hope she stays out. It’s time to put up or shut up.

I think we might have reached the point where Palin entering the race officially would pull many more votes from Perry than from Romney. I REALLY don't want to have to vote for Romney in the general election!

I think it is. If she wanted to run, she blew it. People are cementing behind Perry now. Unless some sort of scandal erupts around him and he completely collapses, she has no chance.

The poll isn’t done by FOX News. It is “Anderson Robbins Research (D) / Shaw & Company Research (R)”.

With all due respect, the last time a Cabinet Secretary was elected as POTUS was Hoover. Sarah will run IMO. Winning is a different matter. There is a lot of time between now and the first primaries. We shall see. I would move heaven and earth for her should she ask for the assistance.

I stopped watching FNC cold turkey about five months ago and don’t miss it at all. I keep cable for ESPN and Fox Sports Channel, which telecasts all the Tigers games and most of the Red Wings games. Other than that, cable is worthless.

Congrats. Did the same thing I forget how long ago. There is nothing on tv news--any station--of any value. It's all old news by the time it airs (if you spend any time here.)

And most pollsters build a sampling and word the questions in a way to get the results their client wants. NBC and CBS even have pollsters weight the results if they are not what was desired.

What a setup!

It’s not like Perry and Romney supporters said “BTW, Palin shouldn’t run”.

Whether one thinks the poll results are accurate or not, it's CERTAIN that if Palin does not announce by this weekend SHE IS OUT.

And, Palin is my first choice.

I could vote for Perry if he was not an open borders/amnesty kinda guy. But because of that I can not. Not even in the General.

What? You've got the number to the Palin's secret hotline? She told you this? I'm really impressed. You are soooo inner circle. Who knew?
