...does the military do anything to prepare the soldier for the reality of actually having to kill an enemy...

I won't rule out that there could have been some psyops material inserted into basic training, but for the most part I would say no. In my experience, the modern P.C. military spent much more time training us NOT to kill the enemy.

I guess you probably don't have a full grasp on the power of self-preservation. When the enemy shoots at you, it becomes extremely easy to shoot back.

one of the objections to porn is that it can lead to a guy viewing women as mere objects

Here I think you may also not have much insight on the mind of man, which is in fact quite simple although not singular. A man can love a woman wholely and as a person. At the same time, with the exception of a short period of time immediately after completing the act itself, most men spend most of their time with a varyingly high degree of desire to do one thing. Each man acts upon that desire in his own way, some become insane rapists, others monks, most men just get it when they can and try not to act like monsters the rest of the time.

Golf? lol

Somebody said that the key to a happy husband is to keep his tummy full and his balls empty. My husband and I had a good laugh over that but he basically admitted it’s mostly true. So I hear what you’re saying, and I do realize it must be tough to be a guy, especially in a culture where skin is everywhere. Having a wife who is always ready, willing, and able has to be a good thing. That’s not the case for guys on deployment and I’m sure it’s tough.

I do realize the power of self-preservation. It’s not being able to do the killing in the heat of battle that would be tough; just the living with it afterwards might be tough for some people. Especially when they have to make the decision in a split second but have the rest of their life to second-guess that decision. When you’ve got political players like John Murtha doing crap like they did to the Haditha Marines it only makes it harder, I would think.

For quite a while I struggled over the question of whether I could shoot to kill somebody who was threatening my kids. I’ve come to the place where I could do it and never look back, I think, but if the situation had arisen before I had sorted that out I’d have had a tough time.
