Hawkeye the dog tugged at the countrys heartstrings when a photo of him lying next to his masters casket went viral. Hawkeye belonged to fallen Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson, who was one of 30 U.S. troops killed when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan earlier this month.
Now the Iowa Hawkeyes football team plans to pay tribute to Tumilson, an Iowa native, during one of their home games in November and they want Hawkeye to participate by leading the team out onto the field, according to the Associated Press.

Pardon me if this is not done correctly, it's my first post.
Thanks.
You did it perfectly—kudos.
A large part of me says we should let the sweet, poignant picture speak for itself and not try to piggyback on it.
Colonel, USAFR
Colonel-
I had not thought about that point, but I think I tend to agree. It was one of the most sincere tributes I’ve ever seen.
I’m not a member of the military, I wish I could have served, and I think that fellow soldiers have a much better feel for these things than I.
All the best to you.
I was watching 9/11 survivor stories last night and saw the amazing story of a guide dog leading his master down the stairs of one of the towers. The stairwell was only large enough for 2 way traffic. When the NYFD started up the stairs to rescue and do what they do, the master let the dog off leash to fend for himself as the traffic became too congested with the dog at his side. The dog went ahead of his master. A few minutes later, the master, who had continued down the stairs with out his dog, felt the fur beneath him. His dog had come back up stairs to find him and eventually guided him to safety. This just broke my heart. Hawkeye at the casket broke my heart. Humans can learn so much from these great creatures. Thanks for the post.
If Hawkeye were to be used in another funeral, I’d agree, but if a football team wants to provide a way for people to pay tribute to Jon Tumlinson via the appearance of his faithful companion, it might give Tumlinson’s family some happiness to do so.
Thanks for the post
I think so too. You don’t try to top or equal such a real, spontaneous, genuine moment.
Lady's got class!
Thank You.
Beautiful post and you look like a pro to me! This story makes me so sad... however, I approve of the idea of using this canine as a representative about his master’s death. Sometimes.. simple stories with simple characters make the most impact.
You picked a great story for your fisrt article posting.
Here’s a biscuit for ya!
That 9/11 story brought tears to me eyes.
Good job in first posting.
Thank you.
I agree.......
I have come to the conclusion that dogs are actually guardian angels in disguise sent down to earth to watch over us, comfort us in affliction, and bring out the better side of our natures (where that is possible).
Nag the heck out of me later tonite and I’ll post the name of a book I’m reading. Same “story”, different dog.
Your first post is perfect. The only thing that could have been added is a “ping” to Joe 6 Pack to notify the doggie list. But, not to worry. Joe found your post and pinged all of us any how. Welcome to FRee Republic. **big grin**
