Can the US Government Seize Your Silver or Gold? You Bet!

How did a Philadelphia family get hold of $40 million in gold coins, and why has the Secret Service been chasing them for 70 years?

U.S. Mint/AP Photo This coin is worth $7.6 million

The most valuable coin in the world sits in the lobby of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in lower Manhattan. It's Exhibit 18E, secured in a bulletproof glass case with an alarm system and an armed guard nearby. The 1933 Double Eagle, considered one of the rarest and most beautiful coins in America, has a face value of $20—and a market value of $7.6 million. It was among the last batch of gold coins ever minted by the U.S. government. The coins were never issued; most of the nearly 500,000 cast were melted down to bullion in 1937.

Most, but not all. Some of the coins slipped out of the Philadelphia Mint before then. No one knows for sure exactly how they got out or even how many got out. The U.S. Secret Service, responsible for protecting the nation's currency, has been pursuing them for nearly 70 years, through 13 Administrations and 12 different directors. The investigation has spanned three continents and involved some of the most famous coin collectors in the world, a confidential informant, a playboy king, and a sting operation at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan. It has inspired two novels, two nonfiction books, and a television documentary. And much of it has centered around a coin dealer, dead since 1990, whose shop is still open in South Philadelphia, run by his 82-year-old daughter.

Yes, I would. But I prefer to approach this kind of thing with the philosophy of General Patton: “No dumb SOB ever won a war by dying for his country. He won the war by making the other dumb SOB die for his.”

Google "Patton and the bonus army" then get back to me.

As I stated earlier, I appreciate your sentiment.....but all things are not as how they appear to be.

Government will never seize personal gold. If such an order came from Washington, it would mean 100% failure of the dollar which means 100% collapse of the world economy. It also means that things are so far gone that people will have bigger problems than worrying about their gold being confiscated.

IMO, Obama and his ilk are actively working to divide the people along racial and class lines. I think their plan is to provoke the tea party/conservatives/redstaters/... into a fight so that they can bring the full weight of the federal government down on the opponents of their vision of a socialist society (bottom up, inside out, top down). We're almost there now.

Remember, Obama has promised to fundamentally transform America. I believe his vision for America is a grandiose socialist utopia which history has shown always leads to desolation and death for millions.

God forbid Obama is successful in implementing his plans. However, conservatives can not afford to play into his hand. We must not be the ones who start something which allows the government to further reduce our freedoms under the guise of putting down rebellion. We must instead do our best to diffuse situations and to educate those on the other side who will listen to reason for as long as we can.

We need to continue to make our voices heard and refuse to participate, as best we can, in feeding a government that has grown well beyond its constitutional mandate. We should prepare ourselves and our families for really bad times ahead and pray to God to help us. Because eventually the support provided by the government to those dependent will collapse. Then the blame game will commence in earnest and you know who they're going to be pointing their fingers at.

If Obama brings Civil War to America, then as Gen. G.S. Patton once said, "We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing them that we've got more guts than they have; or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-bitches, we're going to rip out their living G**damned guts. We're going to murder those lousy c***suckers by the bushel-f******-basket. War is a bloody, killing business. You've got to spill their blood, or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shoot them in the guts. When shells are hitting all around you and you wipe the dirt off your face and realize that instead of dirt it's the blood and guts of what once was your best friend beside you, you'll know what to do!"

War is a bloody, killing business and civil war is the worst kind of war. Every conceivable effort must be exercised in avoiding it and there are peaceful means left to us by the founders in our constitution to aid in restoring our Republic. That is why the left is doing its best to nullify it.

“What Gold?!? All my gold fell off the boat into the river in the same boating accident where I lost all my guns. Yep, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”

Thanks! Love it! I really needed a laugh today, and that did it! :)

Can our gold fillings be far behind?

Why not start confiscating teeth from Rappers, first? That’s where most of the serious ‘grill bling’ is, LOL!
