Couldn't ask for a more appropriate name! :-)
That's about as good as the team of surgeons they used to have up in Coeur d'Alene: Cutter and Slaughter. Don't know if they're still there or not.
It's pretty simple, I think. Bears run very fast. And if they're running very fast straight at you you'll be lucky to get off even one shot, much less twenty-six. And then there's the question of hitting him. And then, if it's a grizzly, there's the question of whether or not hitting him makes any difference at all before you're dinner.
Yeah, I figure that into it.
However, from the animal’s prospective, the loudest thing they usually hear is thunder.
Thunder, accompanied with painful impacts, energy transfer...
Considering these are animals, I would think that instinct would cause them to think twice?
I dunno. Just wondering out loud.
Speculating about this is safer, I guess.
Wouldn’t want to test these thoughts at all.
Don’t you know that they have been “transporting” grizzlies into Yellowstone in an effort to restore a breeding population there? In a previous fatal case the hiker was blamed because he “ignored a sign” saying that a grizzly had been released in the area. In this case you’ll note that the hiker was on an approved trail. Of course guns are not allowed.
It looks like this guy did the trifecta of idiocy for hiking in grizz country; he was alone, he kept his food near him, and (from the way the article reads) he was unarmed.
LOL! Six seconds! How’d you do that?
In the process. Someone frmailed me the link, I’m not that fast
I figured as much. Still, it was one of those “What the?” moments when I refreshed after posting and your post was already sitting behind mine.
Please freepmail me if you wish to be added or dropped from the mitten ping.
now thts funny
It pays to know these things.
Someone needs to invent a bear spray forend for a 12 gauge double ....
A guide I used when fly fishing last year uses bear dogs that harrass but won’t chase a bear. Backed by a double 12Ga the guide carried.
When I was stationed up there in the 80’s I used the same rig. A double 12 gauge with 00 buck and a slug.
Purchased a .500 Linebaugh Bisley before I was transfered to the lower 48 but still packed the double 12Ga when fishing.
Never hike in bear country alone. Always hike with a companion you can out run.........
Me neither. lol...
I've read the Lewis and Clark accounts of their first encounters with these bears. The first couple were small, and they got a little cocky. Lewis wrote in his journal: "Well, you know, I can understand how the Indians...armed as they are with just some bows and arrows, might be frightened of this monster. But in the hands of an experienced woodsman with a good rifle, theyre nothing to be afraid of." But then they started to meet the big ones. The third one took seven or eight balls and still wouldn't come down and chased them into a river. One of them had to climb a tree to get away from one. They had all kinds of fun, until finally, Lewis wrote in his journal, "I find the curiosity of our men with respect to this animal is pretty much satisfied."
:-)
ONE OF OUR PRIESTS (JUST 3 YEARS OUT OF SEMINARY) IS OUT IN YELLOWSTONE RIGHT NOW HOPING TO SEE A GRIZZLEY — ARMED WITH BEAR SPRAY. WE HAVE SUCH A PRIEST SHORTAGE THAT I AM PRAYING THAT HE DOESN’T SIGHT ONE!
At 900fps I wouldn't have any trouble driving one of them through a bears skull. I think You are confusing my posts with the party I am posting too.
Any fire arm is better than no firearm.
Oh, I was just rambling toward you because you had mentioned it.
No confusion at all, and no assumptions made. I was just thinking out loud.
“He drew a Ruger .454 Casull revolver. There was no time to aim, barely time to squeeze the trigger. Hes not sure whether he got off two shots or three, but one proved fatal.”
I’m betting he will remember how many times he fired when he finally gets around to opening the cylinder and reloads the thing.
“Probably better to have a nice 18.5 bbl 12ga pump loaded with slugs. Or maybe alternating slug and 00 buck.”
Look up Saiga 12.
Buy.
Carry 8, or 10 round stick magazines.
The 20 round drum is just too bulky for regular carry, IMHO, and can’t the drum can’t use 3” mag loads.
