NOAA said that maximum average wind speeds at landfall were 85 MPH, hurricane winds stretching outwards for 90 miles. In fact, only two locations even had gusts over 85 MPH.

OK......make it an espresso, then. LOL
Agreed. This whole thing is kind of embarrassing.
Makes us sound like a country full of pussies.
I am in a rural area of Tidewater Virginia. The storm hit us as a category 2. Early this morning you could see and hear chainsaws everywhere clearing roads, etc. We prepared for the storm. We still lost some trees and spent about five hours cleaning up. Our power has not yet been restored. A hassle, but we are very happy
While you are in the yard, would you please run the mower?
I agree. We have been paying insurance and taxes all of our adult lives. We were just getting where we could finally afford to start socking serious money for our retirement away after putting a child through college and doing the things self reliant folks do in our society. Now Obama wants all of the money we were socking away. I am pissed off at every single thing he and the democrats have done to this country since 2006.The whole thing is an utter mess.
If i knew how to fix it...I’d run for office...lol. We do know that returning to true capitalism and limited government would work. How can we ever get it done though? I fear this country is too far gone.
LOL, Muchas gracias and bless you for the great axiom!
Meanwhile, anyone from Boston have a situation report for Boston?
umm
F=MA
The F in the equation is the wind pressure
the mass is the air volume per unit density, which is practicaly a constant
the A is the object it is hitting, such as a house
How does that change exponentially??
Thanks...and for the record, I have been praying for everyone in its path since we knew it was going to bypass our neck of the woods.
Like I say, I know the power these storms can bring. What irritates me most is the hype brought on by Hussein sycophants....I get no pleasure from the folks who are going through power outages, etc. But a power outage is not a major disaster. Neither are downed trees. Flooding? Yes, it is a problem, but trying to make Irene into something it is not is ridiculous.
Thanks, 3S2. You are right.
“WHY THE HELL ARE WE RELYING ON THE FEDS FOR DISASTER RELIEF ANYWAY????????”
I heard that emergency workers of some type in NYC are costing upwards of $300 an hour during Irene. Unionized of course. Wanna bet the national guard members don’t get 10% of that amount?
A in that formula is Acceleration.
I think if NYC wasn’t involved, they would not have covered it like they did.
I agree. And if it wasn’t the East Coast (and I am a New Englander) it wouldn’t have been covered this way either.
The narcissism of the left is astounding.
Dittos! I spent the morning reading about other outages all over the country, other ‘bad storms’,deaths from bad storms, flooding, droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. It happens everywhere all the time. It’s called living in the natural world! From what I can tell..the politicians and media are to blame for most of the unintended consequences that are ruining this country and our citizens.
This whole Irene thing was ridiculous! The whole culture has a death wish I guess. We even have stupid mega disaster ‘What if’ shows on the so called learning channels now. It’s always doom and gloom and catastrophes and disasters and crisis..blahblahblah. So sick of it all I could scream!
lol!
Pfft. Nothing going on around here (25 miles west of Boston) We had some rain and wind.
Both Chinese restaurants in our town were not serving.
But those folks up in Vermont are having a tough go of it due to the rain.
The first NOAA cone that showed Irene moving up the East Coast had it hitting NC at Cat 1 exactly as happened.
For using the actual sustained wind speed expected (were we to actually determine it) :
Force, F = A x P x Cd
A = The projected area of the item
P , Wind pressure (Psf), = .00256 x V^2 (V= wind speed in Mph)
Cd , Drag coefficient, = 2.0 for flat plates. For a long cylinder (like most antenna tubes), Cd = 1.2.
Note the relationship between them is 1.2/2 = .6, not quite 2/3.
This is the force on a discreet constant section. I.E. A length of tubing or some other such member that is part of a structure. The Force per unit area would be found by setting the area to 1.
yeah, it sucks. Kennedy country. But I moved away a loooooong time ago.
Been there, done that. Try it in December with temps in the teens.
