I’m tired of people saying that this hurricane was all media hype. There are 5 trees overturned on my block from a microburst. My friend is right now bailing out her basement from six feet of water. Power is out to almost a million homes in the New York metro area. There are people trapped in hotels in upstate NY from an overflowing reservoir.
The disaster management decisionmakers have to be right every time — and they are damned if they do, damned if they don’t, because if you remember, the worst of Katrina came AFTER the storm.
The people complaining about media hype and an overreaction to the storm should maybe consider themselves lucky instead of considering it overreaction.
While it wasn’t as bad as it could have been, I frankly don’t take the mocking attitude on the storm.
WHAT MANY FAIL TO UNDERSTAND is the pressure when it hit land was consistent with a major hurricane.
However, what occurred was the storm spread its winds out instead of packing them tightly. That is something the computer models are hard-pressed to see, nor human forecasters.
It’s not too often that this occurs. Normally the pressure matches well with the winds at the surface.
If this storm, which had Cat 2 pressure even after NC, did have tight winds at the center, this would have been a true disaster.

You know - in the Midwest we lose DOZENS of people each season to tornadoes and blizzards. Tornadoes do kill the innocent, but blizzards thin the herd. *SMIRK*
I’m sorry people have weather-related troubles, but I’m still so FILLED TO THE BRIM with ‘KATRINA FATIGUE’ thanks to the MSM that I now have a hard time feeling ANYTHING for ANYONE when it comes to natural disasters...
With the mess that Katrina caused and the political fallout for President Bush.....Mr. Obama and other politicians weren’t going to take a chance....and they over reacted. However, unless the NOAA has been coopted into making false predictions. They did, up until the last day, show this was going to be a major hurricane. Which is was earlier in its life cycle. It seemed to lose steam as it approached landfall in NC.
I will NEVER feel sorry for Obama nor defend him...but he just got himself in a no win situation where he was damned no matter what he did. I would call that a case of him being shown the value of humility....IF he is wise enough to learn from it. I doubt he is.
My guess is the total bill will be something like $8 Billion in total losses due to the storm along with 25 or so deaths.

So true. We took a little drive around our area after the storm and saw little damage. We saw quite a few downed limbs and although we heard of downed trees in some areas, we didn't actually see any in or near our neighborhood.
