Scully announces return to booth in '12

LOS ANGELES -- Legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully announced he'll be returning next year for his 63rd season behind the mic at Dodgers games.

Scully made the announcement after he came back from a commercial break in the top of the sixth inning of Friday's game between the Rockies and Dodgers. The Hall of Fame announcer began his career in 1950 announcing Brooklyn Dodgers games. His 62 (and counting) years of service are the longest of any sports broadcaster.

"I don't want to make a big deal out of it, you and I have been friends for a long time," Scully told the audience on PRIME TICKET. "But after a lot of soul searching and a few prayers, we've decided that we will come back with the Dodgers for next year. God's been awfully good to me, allowing me to do the things I love to do. I asked him one more year at least and he said OK."

Of all the people I would believe that God would talk directly to, Vin Scully is definitely one.

We are so blessed that this special human being is still with us and still "in the game."

If God did in fact speak to Vin Scully..no doubt it was with Bob Sheppard's voice..

"LA-DIES AND GEN-TLE-MEN....NOW AN-NOUNCING FOR THE LOS-AN-GE-LES DOD-GERS...VIN-CENT SCUL-LEY..."

I wish I knew. Is he the stadium PA announcer?

Anyway, the Bums better get back in contention next year. They’re doing better the second half of this season.

Bob Sheppard was the Yankees PA announcer at the stadium for over 50 years...know as the “Voice of God”..He died last year..you’ve probably heard him...the reverb effect is awesome....just Google him..there may be some sound tracks..

Legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully announced he'll be returning next year for his 63rd season behind the mic at Dodgers games.

WHOA, I needed to hear some good news today! (As we're in Hurricane Irene's crosshairs)

God bless Vin Scully and thank you for that happy news, FRiend. May our buddy Vin enjoy a long, productive and happy life!

I listened to him call the Dodgers game last night. First time I've heard him in several weeks. The Dodgers were on the road recently (too far east for Vin, I guess) and our stupid MLB package hasn't been giving us as many "Vin Scully games" as usual. (ie, we'll see a Dodgers home game, but they'll pipe in Root Sports for the Rockies instead. Grrr!)

Yep, Derek Jeter is still introduced by a recording of Bob Sheppard. Although I'm not a Yankee fan, I think that's really nice...

Hey..are you still dry?...is the eye gonna pass right over your house?

FYI..a few years before Bob died...when he was only doing day games...there was serious thought given to digitizing his voice...the technology exists..so that they can reconstruct any word or name in the future...IOW..he'd be the Yankees' announcer in perpetuity..

Wiser heads prevailed, and the idea was dropped..so now he does it for Jeter....

I'm a bit surprised by this. I heard Vin a couple times this year, and I think he has been slurring his words a bit.

I'm from NorCal, and Vin called one of the great moments in the history of Bay Area sports for CBS TV: "The Catch" by Dwight Clark of the pass from Joe Montana to beat the Cowboys in 1982. :)

Great news! I’m and Angels fan, but, even for me, Scully is the voice of baseball.

Scully worked for NBC from 1983 to 1989, so, the network paid homage to him by showing the clip of the announcement during a sports update.

Of course, they edited out the word God. /sarc

This, however, is true, and a piece of totally worthless trivia.

Chris Carter, the creator of X-Files, is (was?) a big Dodger fan.

The character Dana Scully was named after Vinny.

I am familiar with Mr Scully - listened to him in the
late fifies as a wee youngun calling the Dodger games,
back when Sandy Koufax was the star du jour.
