My first encounter with a royal dog came in November 1990, when I rather nervously accepted an invitation to lunch at Clarence House to discuss my forthcoming biography of Prince Philip. Ushered into a drawing room by an equerry, I was introduced first to the Queen Mother, then Princess Margaret and finally one of the small brown barrels of fur sitting on the carpet.
The corgi gazed up...

An interesting look back at all the Queen's dogs and how she came to be so devoted to them. She is a first class dog handler and she owns far more than corgis.

Sit! The Queen's skills as a dog handler is renowned. She using hand signals and whistle to control her Labradors I know that American English does differ from English English, but ... perhaps not this much!

'S ok that the dog has short legs. It is designed (we humans did that) for going into holes in the ground to flush out pissed off honey-badgers. So we humans can kill them.
We (humans) are good that way. We modify carnivores for pets. Not herbivores.
Until the next mass extinction event, we're the baddest SOBs on the round globe. ;) T-Rex don't got 'nothin on us.

The corgis are herders and are bred short so that they stay under the kicking hooves of sheep and cattle. They are deceptively fast and agile.

I'll bet I could get one to flush a badger out of a hole in the ground and it would help me kill it. ;)
But whatever Corgis were bred for, us meat-eating, opposed thumb bad asses are responsible.
That was the point I was trying to make.
They are very pretty dogs, never met one personally, but I'm sure I'd get along with one or a group of them. I'm more of a lab kind of guy, big, goofy, ugly and very, very much a predator at heart. ;)

In my old neighborhood there was a corgi-collie mix. It was a frightening hybrid.

We bought a house years ago that came with Rex, a collie malamute mix. He was 8 at the time and lived for another 8 years with us. He was a sweetheart.

He’s handsome. The mix I saw had skinny collie legs, corgi barrel body and corgi bat face and ears.
