BANGOR, Maine A local woman saw a young couple opening water bottles and dumping out the contents in front of Shaws grocery store on Saturday and pulled out her iPhone and videoed the two brazenly committing the common food stamp scam.
She then went into the store at around 1:30 p.m. to report what she saw and police were called to investigate the fraud.
The Bangor couple, a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old female who turned 18 on Sunday, told the investigating officer that they had purchased two cases of water with funding provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program.

I musta missed something.
So, why were they dumping the water?
I don’t get it.
To return the empties and collect the deposit money.
no more food stamps for them. I am sure they will find more hand outs as the Demmies have all sorts of rip offs for scammers like this, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if these kids actually got set on a new path by having to get a real job?
From the article: The bottled water cost around $6 and the duo got $2.40 back in cash from the redeemed bottles. U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the SNAP program, has taken a stand on water dumping buying beverages with food stamps, dumping the liquid and returning the empties for cash and has proposed a new rule that could disqualify recipients who engage in the practice.
Why were they dumping perfectly good bottled water? I could see if there were selling the bottles for a profit/the cash.
What am I missing here?
> To return the empties and collect the deposit money.
They did that for chump change?
Unreal.
What a couple of LOSERS.
You see it perfectly, Alice.
Would it not be simpler and more profitable to ask a friend to do some of his shopping with your food stamps? For example, have him buy $6 worth of food on your stamps, and hand you $6.
Saving the planet, right?

They buy bottles of water ($6), dump the water out, and return the empties for cash ($2). That cash can then be used to buy non-food items You’re not supposed to be able to get cash from SNAP benefits.
They use welfare money from taxpayers to purchase a $6 case of
water, then dump the water so they can pocket $2.40 for returning
the empty bottles. The water is wasted.
Why on earth bottled water is covered by food stamps is beyond me. I merely turn on the tap and out it comes!
That’s a lot cheaper than the real “bottled water scam”, i.e. selling water in bottles. And if taste or purity is a concern, buy a Brita pitcher.
It is very difficult to think clearly when you are on drugs.
Ah, but then they were able to buy a quart of Schlitz. Instant party.
Ah, but then they were able to buy a quart of Schlitz. Instant party.
That would be dangerously close to work. Being on welfare means you shouldn't have to work.
