no more food stamps for them. I am sure they will find more hand outs as the Demmies have all sorts of rip offs for scammers like this, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if these kids actually got set on a new path by having to get a real job?

They profit by getting money on the bottle returns.
From the article: The bottled water cost around $6 and the duo got $2.40 back in cash from the redeemed bottles. U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the SNAP program, has taken a stand on water dumping buying beverages with food stamps, dumping the liquid and returning the empties for cash and has proposed a new rule that could disqualify recipients who engage in the practice.

Why were they dumping perfectly good bottled water? I could see if there were selling the bottles for a profit/the cash.
What am I missing here?

Would it not be simpler and more profitable to ask a friend to do some of his shopping with your food stamps? For example, have him buy $6 worth of food on your stamps, and hand you $6.

But they were recycling, right?

They buy bottles of water ($6), dump the water out, and return the empties for cash ($2). That cash can then be used to buy non-food items You’re not supposed to be able to get cash from SNAP benefits.
To: Westbrook
They use welfare money from taxpayers to purchase a $6 case of
water, then dump the water so they can pocket $2.40 for returning
the empty bottles. The water is wasted.

Why on earth bottled water is covered by food stamps is beyond me. I merely turn on the tap and out it comes!
That’s a lot cheaper than the real “bottled water scam”, i.e. selling water in bottles. And if taste or purity is a concern, buy a Brita pitcher.

It is an immediate profit. Return the bottle and get cash. Even if they sold water at a profit, they would have to include the bottle in the deal and that would nullify the returnable from their possession.

It is very difficult to think clearly when you are on drugs.

That was my thought, too. I guess when you're as rock bottom as these folks are on the economic ladder, you don't have friends doing much shopping with real money?

Ah, but then they were able to buy a quart of Schlitz. Instant party.

Somebody already thought of that.

I could see if there were selling the bottles for a profit/the cash. That would be dangerously close to work. Being on welfare means you shouldn't have to work.
