I saw this scenario on The Weather Channel’s show “It Could Happen Tomorrow,” a month or so ago.

A direct hit on NYC would be an unmitigated disaster. It’s impossible for me to imagine how the city, and the national economy, would survive it.

If you think about how long it has taken to start rebuilding Ground Zero, just imagine how impossible it will be to rebuild New York’s infrastructure.

I am scared to death about this storm, and pray for the safety of NYC (and the rest of the east coast).

I can’t believe that my fellow Freepers are making flippant remarks about what will truly be a devastating national tragedy if it comes to pass.

No one wants to see the city destroyed... the sad fact is many NY’ers will be too arrogant to leave. And we thought New Orleans was bad. Could be bigger than Big Kat back in 2005.

I agree.

As much as I detest the NY attitude so many New Yorkers display, this could really be devastating to the entire country.

NYC and all of the east coast are in my thoughts and prayers.

I don’t think they’re serious. That would be very unChristian, and I would be severely disappointed if it were true. Nobody cares about my disappointment, but I bet they care about Jesus’.
Take heart—we’re praying for the safety of Americans everywhere (especially our military.)

Well, it’ll be moving north at 25 mph when it passes. I don’t think that poses a great danger for a storm surge. Besides, Obama’s in the WH and he promised the waters would recede.

I am very concerned about this storm.

My 96 year old aunt, a life-long 2nd gen New Yorker, said, recently, NYC was in for a serious hurricane hit. It was an interesting comment, for whatever it was worth.

Anyway, why not? NYC is essentially a coastal city.

As such, it is an island, also, a series of islands, peninsulas and rivers. Evacuation would/will be a nightmare with nothing but tunnels and bridges.

The predictions for Irene’s path are, as I understand, very close to one another, and they have not changed much over the past few days.

don't worry, there are no photo ops for the political class in rebuilding sewers and roads, halfwit designs or designers to create monuments. It has always been my lament that the heavy construction contractors best work has been buried.

Thoughtful and appropriate.

Some people crack jokes at funerals. It's one way of coping with the unthinkable, while releasing steam/worry.
