No one wants to see the city destroyed... the sad fact is many NY’ers will be too arrogant to leave. And we thought New Orleans was bad. Could be bigger than Big Kat back in 2005.
If Irene turns out to be a worst case scenario, you will have a situation similar to NOLA. It’s almost 6 years to the day. The affluent will be gone by Friday night into Saturday noon. The poor will have really no choice but to stay. Where are they going to go ? And on what funds? IIRC, welfare/SS checks won’t come out till early September, which was one of the problems in NOLA. Maybe some enterprising kid will appropriate a school bus?
Long Island is supposed to get it hard, so as a retreat that’s out. There’s also talk of its going up the Hudson to Albany, so that’s out, as is all of New England. They’re going to have to travel some serious distance to avoid this if it’s as they are predicting.
We’re outside DC and will probably get serious wind/rain, but I don’t see us in the same jeopardy as NY. Nonetheless, we are ready for that worst case scenario.
