BRAMWELL (WVVA) - The Mercer County Sheriff's Department has identified the suspected robber shot dead by a customer in a Bramwell convenient store -- and arrested his wife in connection with the robbery.
Authorities say the robbery occurred shortly before midnight Monday at the Pop Shop convenience store in Bramwell.
Police say 41-year-old David Douglas Roberts entered the store wearing a mask and pointing a shotgun. While in the process of stealing several hundred dollars, Roberts was shot by a customer in the store who was carrying a firearm.
Roberts died en route to Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
The customer was licensed to carry a concealed weapon.
Roberts' wife, 31-year-old Jessica Roberts, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with conspiracy and armed robbery. She was being held on $100,000 bond.
I didn't know she was in WV?
You said, “I carry a small caliber handgun and my first thought upon reading this was that I wondered if my peashooter would do enough damage to prevent him firing back.”
My exact thoughts. I have carried a Ruger LCP (.380) for sometime. Is that enough gun? Well, yes and no. There’s too many variables in each shooting situation for a definitive answer.
So gun shopping I go. Over to the largest gun dealer in Kentucky, wanting something small in the 9mm caliber.
The only thing they had at that time was a Kel Tec PF-9. Kel Tec? Eww!!
Well, that money was burning a hole in my pocket so I bought it. Price was low, in the 260.00s or 280.00s, can’t remember and I had money to spare. Olive Garden time!!
The PF-9 is a bit larger and a bit heavier than the LCP as expected, but 100% concealed carry.
How does it shoot? I’ve put 50 rounds through it so far. No jams and deadly accurate at 10 yards.
I’m extremely pleased with the PF-9 and it’s a Kel Tec.... Eww!!
I love my little .32 because it is so easy to carry...but I wouldn't want to have to square off with a shotgun.
That said, I do love Rugers and wanted a .380, but the wait was too long, so I settled for my little P-32.
Your post made me chuckle!
I have a couple of those Keltec’s. Yea, they are also called jamm a matics!! I have them simply because they are cheap and I keep them in my vehicles. If some punk rips me off they are not going to walk away with my good stuff!
A .32 in the hand beats a .45 in the drawer back home because it’s too big to carry. I don’t know anyone volunteering to be gut-shot with a .32 ... I’m fortunate in that I found a reliable, compact 9mm that I can carry all day, and that I could afford to buy.
My hubby carries the Kel-Tec PF-9; I carry the Kel-Tec P3AT. Very concealable. We’ve never had any problems with ours jamming.
Try a S&W Model 641 5 shot .357 revolver with a 2” barrel and shrouded hammer. That little sweetie is my car and carry gun.
I use to have a .38 S&W airweight. I bought the internal hammer model and that was a mistake re: accuracy. I like the .357 models with the shrouded hammer (weight around 12 oz IIRC), but they are right around a thousand bucks new.
WOW! In 1995 mine cost about $350.00. What I really like about mine is that there’s a litle catch in the trigger just before it cooks off, a lot like the way a compound bow’s string becomes easier to hold when it reaches full draw. That catch gives it accuracy close to, but not quite at the level of, a fully cocked single action revolver.
What hollow point is the best for .45 ACP?
Something that WILL put ‘em down.
OH! And, BUMP!
I have a Kel Tec P-32 with over 500 rounds through it and it has been 100% reliable.
That said, the .32 is not a robust round and I would prefer almost anything else to it. However, often the P-32 is my best option for carry, so I carry it. It's not my preferred carry weapon and I will carry something bigger when I can, but it is much, much better than nothing and fills a needed niche.
Always use the heaviest weight bullet you can find.
I was kinda hoping for a company name and product.
Winchester, Federal Premium, etc.
Although I certainly support CCW and right to protect, I wonder if this guy maybe over-stepped the original reason for CCW.
I suppose if the shotgun totin' perp pointed or threatened the CCW holder, certainly he/she would be justified in self-defense use of his firearm.
However, if he/she was just "playing cops and robbers" and was NOT a member of LE, there MAY be some disagreements on his/her use of a defensive firearm legally carried.
>>> I wonder if this guy maybe over-stepped the original reason for CCW.
I hear what you are saying but the answer is no. The civilian did well. The crime was under way and the shotgun showed that mortal danger was real and immediate, not speculative.
Waiting for an innocent party to be killed before responding was the choice you suggest. Rough on the victims.
Hazard of the trade.
Indeed, and I hear what you say, BUT was the shotgun threatening HIM? I am playing the devils advocate, I know, but I am pretty sure in stating that having a CCW is NOT a legal reason OR A RESPONSIBILITY to act as a LEO. I do share your feelings, but there are legal ramifications.
I like Remington and hydroshock.
One of the biggest problems in the US today is the belief that it is the responsibility of someone else to do something to stop crime. All citizens should be will to help, it is a moral responsibility of all to help stop crime.
