UPPER DARBY, Pa. - As police in Upper Darby, Pa., search for more young people involved in last week's flash mob, more adults are thinking about arming themselves with guns.
People are talking about how afraid they are of being caught in the path one of these flash mobs while they're out minding their own business, and they want to be ready.
Law enforcement officials say it's a nightmare in the making because ordinary, private citizens are getting gun permits.
"We have people now that are fearful and carrying guns because of children. How sad is that?" Upper Darby police Captain George Rhoades said.
He said it's all legal.
"It's all self-defense," Rhoades said.
He says about 10 to 20 applications are processed every week in Upper Darby.
Rhoades says with that many people "carrying" and the violent actions of these flash mobs, the worst is bound to happen.
"Now we have this mentality, 'I'm not going to retreat. I'm not going to call 9-1-1. I'm going to be a vigilante and take care of the problem myself,'" he said.
That means flash mob children could be dead, and the would-be victims may have the right, but Rhoades is appealing to everybody to think twice.

When word gets out that the crackas is got guns, ain’t gonna by no flash mobs. Dig it? Cause dem bruthras was lookin’ for some easy pickin’s.
The NIGHTMARE IS the flash mob. The NIGHTMARE is NOT citizens protecting themselves. These law enforcement officials need to grow up and get real...
Rhoades says with that many people "carrying" and the violent actions of these flash mobs, the worst is bound to happen."going to be a vigilante" my a**! A vigilante is looking for the bad guy(s) -- in this (hypothetical) case the bad guys are after the innocent practicing self defense.
"Now we have this mentality, 'I'm not going to retreat. I'm not going to call 9-1-1. I'm going to be a vigilante and take care of the problem myself,'" he said.
The next time a flash mob is reported, Chief Rhoades should answer the call, alone and unarmed.
After the Chief gets out of the hospital, ask him if his opinion has changed.
Cull the herd I say.
Another "just lay back and enjoy it" LEO.
Don't worry, he'll be there to hold your hand and fill out the paperwork a few hours later.
They should.
People are getting fed up with it.
Sounds like the plot of a Clint Eastwood movie
“the flash mobs will be history.”
Yes, but then the riots will start. The cops need to drop nets on the a-holes, and prosecute. But I’m ready! No wait! I’m not ready! I lost all my guns in a boating accident! Really!
What a supercilious prick.
How about a mentality that says "I can't trust these bureaucratic prima donnas to do anything but clean up the mess, so I need to take care of myself?"
The Japanese were afraid to invade the USA because they knew that every male citizen had access to a weapon. These ‘Flash Mobs” better learn a lesson from Japan. Even a load of rock salt into your legs from a 12 gauge will restrict your future agility when shooting hoop. Double ‘ought’ buck will put you on wheels for the rest of your life!
I think the police need to track down the "source" of the instigation of these flash mobs. I would be willing to bet "community organizers" are at the root of this.
Serious quetion here. If a huge mob is coming at you and you are armed to the teeth what is legally allowed?
I assume you can shoot everyone that is coming right at you not matter how many keep coming. There could be some serious body count and you can count on the MSM covering it every second for the next two weeks.
If what he says is true, we should thank the “flash mobs” for waking people up and making them realize that Capt. Rhoades’ outfit isn't up to the job.
How sad indeed !!
These gang bangers may be yutes but they are not children.
As a Bible tot'en, gun carryin' rednecked bigot, I am fully prepared to protect my family, my self, my property and my space from these roaming vandals.
This cop's protecting the rights of black teenagers to terrorize and rob innocent citizens? What's next? Cops protecting the rights of drunk drivers over the rights of people they run over?
Citizens have the right NOT TO BE BULLIED. If the police can't or WON'T protect citizens, then citizens need to protect themselves.
Since Obama and Co are probably behind this; it will be their fault.
“Now we have this mentality, ‘I’m not going to retreat. I’m not going to call 9-1-1. I’m going to be a vigilante and take care of the problem myself,’” he said.
It’s not vigilantism A**Hole, it’s self defense!
Dan, I would like to offer this up to you if you will take a minute to read it.
