UPPER DARBY, Pa. - As police in Upper Darby, Pa., search for more young people involved in last week's flash mob, more adults are thinking about arming themselves with guns.
People are talking about how afraid they are of being caught in the path one of these flash mobs while they're out minding their own business, and they want to be ready.
Law enforcement officials say it's a nightmare in the making because ordinary, private citizens are getting gun permits.
"We have people now that are fearful and carrying guns because of children. How sad is that?" Upper Darby police Captain George Rhoades said.
He said it's all legal.
"It's all self-defense," Rhoades said.
He says about 10 to 20 applications are processed every week in Upper Darby.
Rhoades says with that many people "carrying" and the violent actions of these flash mobs, the worst is bound to happen.
"Now we have this mentality, 'I'm not going to retreat. I'm not going to call 9-1-1. I'm going to be a vigilante and take care of the problem myself,'" he said.
That means flash mob children could be dead, and the would-be victims may have the right, but Rhoades is appealing to everybody to think twice.

“Rhoades is appealing to everybody to think twice.”
1. Shall I suffer the little children to come unto me and spread the other cheeks? Or shoot someone? No.
2. Shall I suffer the little children to come unto me and spread the other cheeks? Or buy a gun in case I have to shoot someone? Yes.
These flash mobs are nothing compared to the nationwide rioting we will see on Election Night 2012 if (when) Obama is defeated. It will not be a pretty sight.
Shoot center mass. Make sure you kill them so there is no trial or incarceration for the public to pay for.
No doubt they will. I will defend myself and my family just the same. It is better to be alive in order to face the repercussions ... which are "none" in the case of self defense.
Why?
Hollow points produce more lasting results....
This is a very bad idea! You WILL be prosecuted for illegal discharge of a firearm in public. If you hurt someone, you will be charged with a felony. Brandishing a weapon will also leave you open for a misdemeanor charge.
If you pull out a weapon, it is best to start pumping lead into those who pose a DIRECT danger to you. No other course of action will prevent charges from being filed against you.
Yep, and these are better from large caliber magnums.
No way. There's no revenue for the State in doing that.
This used to be the essence of being American.
I think it still is.
Not so sad. It means some innocent people will have a defense against mob violence.

Ken, you are absolutely right. What do I know, I have only been copping in the ghetto for fifteen years...
It’s great that we have the freedom to ignore valuable first hand intelligence if we so desire...
Shoot them all.
....And let God sort them out!
The only problem I have with that, is that I have to let a lawyer walk away with my life's savings to get that chance to "let a jury sort it out." This is where people become afraid to defend themselves.
Unless this Rhoades guy was severely quoted out of context, which we all doubt, he is an idiot.
Retreat and call 911? The point of these flash mobs is to do their (racist) damage and get away before the cops can respond. And most of the authorities are openly admitting they can’t do anything about it. You can’t retreat and 911 is worthless. Yet this police captain is critical of people that don’t want to be brutalized.
This man should be fired. Worthless.
Well, since clowns like you aren't doing jack$h*t about it, SOMEONE else will. If you don't like it, then do your F'ING JOB!
Children? "Children of the Corn", more likely.
“When some Joe the every day citizen drops one or two Flash Mob thugs, the flash mobs will be history.”
Exactly. Mobs are “brave” until a couple participants get clobbered. After that, they’re just a lone thug scurrying away, or a scared moslem hiding under the nearest camel.
