There were some words and language that seemed to be inappropriate as far as the parents and some of the kids were concerned, Earling said.
There's the key... "as far as the parents and some of the kids were concerned". In other words, the school itself, represented by Earling, DOES NOT SEE A PROBLEM WITH THIS AT ALL!!!!

If backward unsophisticated folks would just let the enlightened experts have their way, everything would be just fine.

Earling said the school districts summer reading list was prepared by a committee made up of teachers, librarians and school administrators. The board of education ultimately approved the list.
They read the books, he said. They didnt feel it was inappropriate based on the language thats used, common language used on the street. The superintendent said students have seen more graphic things on television or in the movies and noted that only about a dozen people actually complained.
I can just see this smarmy academic elitist shrugging his shoulders and smuggly dismissing this as no big deal... we'll just update the list to include a rating system.

Some snips from the local paper:
One such selection, Norwegian Wood, which was on the required reading list for incoming tenth-grade honors English students, includes a graphic depiction of a lesbian sex scene between a 31-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl.

"We were just trying to get students to read. That's pathetic. My kids all read all the time ... when they're supposed to be eating, when they're supposed to be doing chores, when they're in the bathroom. Anoreth took the Federalist Papers on a date, "in case I get bored."
The students in this article probably can't decode and process text well enough even to enjoy the homosexual orgy.
