I should add that if maggots are allowed to breed in a powerless refrigerator, the unit will almost certainly be permanently ruined. Homeowner’s insurance will not cover this since most people living in coastal zones now have hefty deductibles for named windstorms.
Frankly, the named windstorm deductible is a big reason I’ll probably never evacuate again. This is a decision everyone must make for himself, as circumstances dictate — but do not let govt. officials panic you into a stampede. Buildings in good repair that were honestly constructed in the first place don’t just blow down, even in cat 3+ storms. The damage comes mostly from windblown water, through broken windows and roof damage. The DANGER comes from storm surge: homes and cars should be 15+ feet above mean high tide level to be considered safe from Irene’s storm surge. People at risk for storm surge should be planning their getaway. Pack a bug-out bag now, with a week’s worth of clothes.
Another thing people should do now is make extensive photo/video records of their possessions.
Hadn’t thought of the fridge problem for evacuees. We’ve never lived close enough to have to evacuate. We had to deal with interminable power lossage and evacuees!
Note to those in the eastern parts of PA and upstate NY. You will have evacuees. They’re currently booking all your hotel rooms right now! They will check in and then hit your grocery stores. Then *you* will be out of bread and milk too! Be warned.

That was a hurricane, but our houses were built by a previous generation of more honest and hard working men—built especially for hurricanes. Many of the roofs were blown off, but most of the other buildings in the City were leveled. Funny...those with brick-veneered houses were the people who evacuated, most of ‘em (houses mostly leveled, even though otherwise built for hurricanes). Electricity and phones out for weeks. The National Guard distributed dry ice, water and other supplies at points all over the City. They did armed guard mount. So did neighbors. It was generally understood, that looters would be shot.
There’s a big difference between aftermaths of disasters then and now. For those of us who aren’t originally from places like California or New York, our national culture is very different today (libertine hippie apathy, “no more Mr. nice guy”).

Not exactly depending on where you are. Atlantic Beach hasn’t been hurricaned in decades. In NC tradition, people got cheap and planted mobile homes all around that area. My sister had one in Swannsboro. Better yet, they attached sheds and desck structures to the mobile homes. All of that becomes like artillery in a Cat3/4. And they float around.

I think your right. They path is hugging the coast more than what they were thinking yesterday. I live hour and a half north of DC just across the MD/PA border and looking like we might get the edges of it. Looking like NYC is going to get lambasted.

Good thing they announced it now.It will take 48hours to get that many folks out.
I did hear that CapeMay has requested 36 NG vehicles to help in the evacuation.
Naw, Irene will hardly affect us in Tamps.
Besides, NOBODY drives the Gonzomobiles except me, and I don't leave until the water's rising!

I like Jeff Masters’s blog at Weather Underground’s tropical weather page. I have relied on WU through several seasons now, and find them excellent.

IMO the wealth redistributors and Obama voters will be out in full force, even if no cellphones they’ll still be roaming looking for targets of opportunity.....
It should go without saying that mobile homes are not really safe in a severe thunderstorm, much less a hurricane.
