GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann said today that Americans "fear the rise of the Soviet Union" during an appearance on a conservative radio talk show.
The Soviet Union broke up into 15 separate republics 20 years ago. Boris Yeltsin was the first freely elected leader of Russia, the largest of those republics.
"What people recognize is that there's a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward," Bachmann said on Jay Sekulow's radio show.
Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, was trying to explain that Americans are concerned about issues beyond federal spending and the debt.

Maybe Bachmann has an excuse, she might have just flown in from Miami Beach, BOAC, and it was a dreadful flight.
I look forward to her pronouncements on Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and East Germany.
And why did she lump in India? Are they really a threat on the same level as China or Russia? Aren't we allies with them? Didn't we just sign a big nuclear deal with them? A deal that Bachmann voted for by the way. If India is such a threat and Americans fear them why did she vote to extend nuclear privileges and cooperation to them?
I've always liked her but there does seem to be a pattern of this type of thing. Lexington and Concord, the John Wayne/Gacy thing, the Elvis' birthday thing, the founders against slavery thing, the JQ Adams a founder, now this. Not a good sign going forward.
And if there's audio and it can be replayed and used in ads that's even worse.
Perry is looking a bit better to me.
but you see Ed Rollins, the great Ed Rollins is in control!
This is very sad. I think she’s actually pretty smart but something keeps happening between the brain and the mouth that isn’t good.
I think I'm ok with Perry, and hopefully he'll use his words more carefully ("treason" by the Federal Reserve). We'll see.
Romney isn't going to make a massive screw up like this. Romney is competent. Had a great career at Bain, did well with the Olympics. He doesn't seem to have these gaffes, he's got a good organization. However, his ideology is certainly suspect. And that's a big problem.
I think it's too early for Paul Ryan. And Chris Christie.
She bothers me.
I said the other day that it looks like rollins is deliberately sabataging her. Every single day there is something like this. Before, it was once in awhile. But now, it’s a habit. Something is not right here. She needs to get him gone. It’s like he has her in a cage or something and he has total control.
Yes. Ed Rollins. Eventually even the hardcore MB supporters are gonna have to admit it (not referring to you personally, just making a general comment) and quit whining every time someone points that out.
He’s there to end her run. Period.
I’d like to think she meant the return of the Soviet Union, which is entirely possible.....but who knows.
I can remember how many people, most people, here attacked Sarah Palin back in 2007 and 2008. How disappointed most people here were when Sarah got the vp nomination. Most everybody (here) was saying the same things about Sarah Palin 3 and 4 years ago.
I don’t know why people eventually started to switch to Sarah, but only after she lost in 2008.
Maybe the same thing will happen with the conservative Michelle Bachmann. Michelle Bachmann also won’t be very well liked around here until a few years after obama beats Romney?
I like Bachmann (and Palin) a lot, but Bachmann is becoming a Biden gaffe-o-matic.
I’m sorry Michele....I’m out. Way too gaffe prone to win.
I didn’t see that here. The reaction to Palin on FR was very positive from the jump. You can go back and look at the threads.
Here’s the very first mention of Palin on FR from June 11 2003:

Here’s the threads from the day McCain picked her. The reaction was very positive:

“I think I’m ok with Perry”
I become more ok with Perry every time Bachmann opens her mouth lately. I want Cain to catch on but I don’t see it happening. Santorum? I like him fine but he’s just not the guy.
Cain or Perry please Lord. With sugar on top.
I’d be thrilled with Palin but I once left a prom date after she had me waiting in her living room for over an hour. I once left a wife and step-daughter home on a Sunday morning and went to church alone, so I wouldn’t be late.
I don’t wait for wimmen folk, I move on.
What does Rollins have to do with this?
She was doing a radio interview with Jay Sekulow, about as friendly a guy to evangelicals and conservatives as you’ll find. It’s not like some liberal pundit was going after her.
You think Rollins told her to say the Soviet Union? Even if he did shouldn’t she know it no longer exits?
I mean, especially for a Republican and for a party that adores Reagan. It was just pretty bad.
And the India as enemy also seemed a bit misplaced. Especially since she voted for the India nuclear deal.
All I can say is that she’s lucky SNL is on its summer hiatus.
Barack Obama made outright Marxist calls for the redistribution of wealth and it didn’t hurt his campaign any. Anyone who brought the matter up was considered “extremist” and accused of taking his words out of context. Besides that Joe the Plumber wasn’t really a plumber and... < /sarc >
If that is true then she has no mind of her own, And Rollins is her brain.
Here is what she said:
“What people recognize is that there’s a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward,” Bachmann said on Jay Sekulow’s radio show.”
I guess it is a gaffe to make the observation that people fear Western Civilization is in decline. In fact, it has been in decline since 1914. She’s not supposed to say that.
Thank God that a presidential candidate running her own campaign does not have your attention span, or your need for instant gratification.
Palin is running a guerrilla campaign to become President, she is not standing you up for some school function.
She isn’t standing you up for anything, you don’t have the attention span that can enable you to support what seems to be your first choice for president so you wander off chasing butterflies or whatever.
You can tell the media wants her to take votes from Palin. If Sarah said the Elvis thing and this it would be all over the world.
Hey! I agree with you. It’s just that she is different since she hired rollins. And it is very noticeable. I think she’s stressed and whatever she is taking might be affecting her. I never supported her for president, but I don’t want to see her destroyed either.
I actually think she got in way over her head and just can’t handle it. She should stop before she throws away whatever credibility she has left.
