Perry Plays Obama, Media Like a Fiddle
Pajamas Media ^ | August 18th, 2011 | The PJ Tatler

When Gov. Rick Perry returns to Austin this weekend, he’s likely to return to a hero’s welcome. He launched his campaign in a flawless rollout in South Carolina last weekend, captured the top spot in Rasmussen by double-digits, and is off to a dominating start in the GOP primary. Perry’s welcome will take all of that into account, as well as something else: Those of us who have watched him campaign have seen him blitz like this before, and in the past it has been a prelude to a long, entertaining campaign and ultimate victory.

The first week since Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced his run for the presidency has gone something like this: Perry says something provocative, media pounces, Obama reacts, and Perry either re-states what he said or ups the ante by saying something new and just as provocative. The media wonders aloud whether Perry is able to stay on script and establishment Republicans like Karl Rove toss out warnings that Perry may have gone too far. All of that misses the possibility, which I treat as fact, that Rick Perry knows exactly what he’s doing and this first week has gone exactly as he expected.

What many, and I include Rove and Huckabee and his other critics in this, don’t seem to understand is, this is how Rick Perry campaigns. And wins. He understands the media and his opponent better than they understand themselves. The media that fretted when Perry shot a coyote last year missed the fact that most Texans reacted to that same story with something along the lines of “The governor packs heat and protected his dog while jogging? Cool.” Perry is using the media’s own elitism and lack of connection with mainstream America against it, and against Obama, turning both against each other.

Sweet! At last!

I would remind Mr Rove that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind other RINOs that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!

I agree.
This is the Chicago mob we’re fighting.
They took down the Clintons.

It will take somebody firing high caliber stuff to take those guys out.

Not committed yet but Rick has impressed me. The knives that have come out for him here on FR and in the media has made me look very close at him. I see someone who will campaign like it is a fight for life.

We’ll see how it plays out.

The media won’t ask Obama the big questions. They never have because the guy can’t think on his feet.

Some of the media after all this time are getting fed up with Obama. What Perry is doing is giving them a way to stick a microphone in Obama’s face and ask Obama questions that Perry has setup. This gives some in the media an out. They can point at Perry and say it is his fault for the tough questions. Some of the media will find this to be a bit of fun and may even remind them that they are actually in the reporting business.

This technique starts to peel back Obama’s thin skin while allowing Perry to play bare knuckled which is what he HAS to do with Obama.

This is pretty fun to watch...

Right on right on...don’t mess with Texas, especially when you are a scrawney Chicago street punk with a history of frequenting gay bath houses.

Steers not queers!!!

I love the fact that he came out running a general election campaign against Obama, rather than running a primary campaign.

I’m a Texan and I rolled my eyes at the thought of Perry running as I don’t think of him as being a consistent conservative. He’s not perfect but he does understand there’s a line in the sand and he seems to have chosen to side with the Tea Party on most issues.

He won me over when I saw him teasing the press and Obama about having to watch his words because the President didn’t like what he said. The twinkle in his eye and sly smile reminded me so much of Sarah Palin. I’d love to see them team up. They’re both fearless and enjoy the game of politics. Obama will wet his pants.

You should recognize that much, not all but much, of the anti-perry attacks on this forum are made by staunch palin supporters who see a threat to their dream.

You know I wasn’t originally for Perry either. I live in Texas and have watched him as you have. However, once I really looked at all the candidates [Sarah has always been my number 1 pick]...I have come to realize, Perry has the jobs and economy record of over 10 years. Sarah Palin can’t match what Perry has. They are both fighters and I hope they can team up. We have to have someone who can beat the socks off barry...and Perry can.

Perry looks believable doing that; can anyone imagine the Dipstick in Chief trying to pull something like that off? I doubt he’d even know which end to point away from himself.

Perry is "playing the media like a fiddle" because he is a "media approved" candidate; i.e., the OWNERS of the media have anointed him as an "acceptable" Republican candidate.

Contrast the way they treat him with the way they treat "unacceptable" candidates such as Bachmann or Santorum and note the difference: Perry is getting gobs of air time on every venue, including CSPAN.
