American Axle to Close Plant in Blow to UAW (Unions strike again!)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 08/18/11 | Jeff Bennett

Posted on 08/18/2011 2:05:10 PM PDT by TonyInOhio

DETROIT–American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. dealt the United Auto Workers a second blow Thursday by announcing the closure of its New York gear-making plant after union rank-and-file members failed to ratify a new contract late last month.

The Cheektowaga plant, employing about 100 hourly and salaried workers, will be shut sometime after Feb. 25, American Axle spokesman Christopher Son said. The announcement comes a month after the company said it will close its Detroit plant after workers there failed to agree to wage cuts. That closure will throw about 300 people out of work.

Reuters is reporting rank and file failed to approve a 33 % cut in pay and benefits.

Thought certainly nobody wants to take a 1/3 cut in total compensation, I'm sure even at 1/3 cut it is far better than that service sector job paying $7.50 an hour they might find .

Nope, you’ve made your stance crystal-clear, and you know what? You are part of the problem. God help whomever is your employer. Actually, I would not be at all surprised if you said that you actually work for State or Federal government.

Yeah....standing your ground.....right. Making pathetic arguments for anachronistic “unions” who do nothing but plunder and destroy companies. You’re talking here to people with decades of life experience and have seen up close what these pathetic “unions” and their criminal “leadership” and lemming-like, weak-minded membership have done to the manufacturing sector of this country, slick.

Get bent.

I’m not some pro-union guy; I’m Pro-American standing up for the guy trying to make an honest living.

‘Fat Cat’ greedy bastards are constantly trying to reap in the millions and billions on the backs of the working guy.

I thought slavery ended in 1865.

Yet you keep sounding like a BIG pro-union guy!

Using phrases like..."greedy bastards" "on the backs of the working guy"..."I'm Pro-American"?......

That throw in of "slavery" sealed it.

It’s long past time for the Obammunists to implement Directive 10-289:

“In the name of the general welfare,” read Secretary Hilda Solis, “to protect the people’s security, to achieve full equality and total stability, it is decreed for the duration of the national emergency that—

“Point One. All workers, wage earners and employees of any kind whatsoever shall henceforth be attached to their jobs and shall not leave nor be dismissed nor change employment, under penalty of a term in jail. The penalty shall be determined by the Unification Board, such Board to be appointed by the Bureau of Economic Planning and National Resources. All persons reaching the age of twenty-one shall report to the Unification Board, which shall assign them to where, in its opinion, their services will best serve the interests of the nation.

“Point Two. All industrial, commercial, manufacturing and business establishments of any nature whatsoever shall henceforth remain in operation, and the owners of such establishments shall not quit nor leave nor retire, nor close, sell or transfer their business, under pentalty of the nationalization of their establishment and of any and all of their property.

“Point Three. All patents and copyrights, pertaining to any devices, inventions, formulas, processes and works of any nature whatsoever, shall be turned over to the nation as a patriotic emergency gift by means of Gift Certificates to be signed voluntarily by the owners of all such patents and copyrights. The Unification Board shall then license the use of such patents and copyrights to all applicants, equally and without discrimination, for the purpose of eliminating monopolistic practices, discarding obsolete products and making the best available to the whole nation. No trademarks, brand names or copyrighted titles shall be used. Every formerly patented product shall be known by a new name and sold by all manufacturers under the same name, such name to be selected by the Unification Board. All private trademarks and brand names are hereby abolished.

“Point Four. No new devices, inventions, products, or goods of any nature whatsoever, not now on the market, shall be produced, invented, manufacturerd or sold afer the date of this directive. The Office of Patents and Copyrights is hereby suspended.

“Point Five. Every establishment, concern, corporation or person engaged in production of any nature whatsoever shall henceforth produce the same amount of goods per year as it, they or he produced during the Basic Year, no more and no less. The year to be known as the Basic or Yardstick Year is to be the year ending on the date of this directive. Over or under production shall be fined, such fines to be determined by the Unification Barod.

“Point Six. Every person of any age, sex, class or income, shall henceforth spend the same amount of money on the purchase of goods per year as he or she spent during the Basic Year, no more and no less. Over or under purchasing shall be fined, such fines to be determined by the Unification Board.

“Point Seven. All wages, prices, salaries, dividends, profits, interest rates and forms of income of any nature whatsoever, shall be frozen at their present figures, as of the date of this directive.

“Point Eight. All cases arising from and rules not specifically provided for in this directive, shall be settled and determined by the Unification Board, whose decisionswill be final.”

Are you kidding? No, seriously..open up the books? Are you INSANE? There are 2 things that I as an employer will NEVER consider. The first is opening my books for anyone short of the IRS (and then ONLY in the presence of my CPA & Lawyer), and second, allowing a union to tell me how to run my business. Unions are just like the government. Too expensive, useless, and are parasites on the “working man's” back.

If my employees don't like the way I run my business, they're free to go somewhere else. Slavery DID end quite a while ago. And if one of them ever PRESUMED to ask to see my books, they're history. Buh-bye!

Are you sure you're on the right site? Greed is good...say it with me now...greed is good. What do you think drives this economy? Duh-huh. I'm not in business to save the world, or provide the less astute with a job. I'm in it to make money. Plain & simple. I've got brains, skills, gumption,a healthy dose of audacity, and know how to hustle. I figure another 15 years of ass busting and I'll be done.

Greed is the downfall of capitalism.

Pray tell, what is your favored economic system.

And you must keep in mind you, personally, do not get to be the one who chooses the winners and losers in the socialistic pecking order, FRiend.

While you're looking things up, check out the Russian word "dacha".

You are absolutely hilarious. You don’t argue the value of American Axle’s CEO’s contribution to the company, nut instead argue the disparity between him and the rank-and-file.

If you can’t see the difference between those two subjects, you’re hopeless.

What's good for mankind is freedom. Unions are hardly a friend of freedom.

Very true, and throw big government in the anti freedom mix as well. When you're paying close to half your income in some sort of government tax (and I realize many pay even more) we're no longer a free people. Why more people don't see that is something I'll never understand.
