Bush had a pretty simplistic take on immigration. Perry's has been more complicated, involved and evolving. He's learned from Bush's mistakes and talks more shrewdly.
A governor can always blame the feds for not enforcing the laws. Whether Perry would do anything differently if he were President himself, I don't know.
Upon becoming governor he went to Israel to learn how THEY were securing THEIR border, and came back to see what he could implement in Texas — knowing that border security is the CONSTITUTIONAL JOB of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT and not the state.
But Perry is quoted as saying:
"We know how to deal with border security, and you don't do it by building a fence." Aug. 28, 2007
He also said, just yesterday:
"You got strategic fencing in some of the metropolitan areas – it’s very helpful. But the idea that you’re going to build a wall from Brownsville to El Paso is just -- it’s ridiculous on its face."
He has a point there, but the language isn't likely to win over critics of porous borders.
Perry said that one of the reasons for his Israel trip was to study Israel security technology. It doesn't look like it was the main reason (more about trade, technology and the economy than about borders).
Perry's tough talk to impress the Israelis and their supporters stateside doesn't necessarily reflect his usual approach to US-Mexico border issues.
Our government requires quite a few other vaccines as well.

I don’t hear any protests about the other vaccines that have existed for years. Only the Perry put forth. Why is that? Seems like it is more about the person and less about the vaccine.
I don’t like the nanny-state attitude exhibited, nor do I like the heavy-handed way it was handled, nor do I like the unconscionable attitude Perry demonstrated toward the legislature when he realized he had lost.
So it is more about the Person and less about the Vaccine. No big surprise there.
We require Hepatitis B as well. You won’t catch that just from sitting in the classroom. But Rick Perry didn’t put that one in place so it’s okay.
I also hate the stupidity exhibited by mandating a vaccine that had NOT been properly tested in the age group they were trying to foist it upon.
As of June 22, 2011, approximately 35 million doses of Gardasil have been deliveried according to the CDC. They still recommend its use.

Until 1989, Rick Perry was a conservative Democrat. He switched parties as, like many Democrats including Ronald Reagan and Phil Gramm, he saw that party moving farther and farther to the left. Under Perry’s decade as governor, hundreds of Texas Democrats have followed his lead and become Republicans. As a former Democrat, Perry can speak to that swath of his former party that has become disenchanted with their party as President Obama has taken it even farther to the left, in a way that few Republicans can. He can also speak well and credibly to all wings of the national GOP, from the fiscal cons to the social cons to the libertarian set.
He would appeal to all segments of the Republican electorate and would come armed with a record of economic success and a commitment to liberty that no other contender can match.
Texas has been voted #1 business climate for the last seven years.
Texas has been getting all of California’s jobs.
Perry must be doing something right.
We need a good business guy right now.

It’s outrageous that vaccine damage is completely discounted. A vaccine reaction destroyed my nephew’s life and the lives of thousands of others, yet the government still thinks it’s acceptable to ignore that kind of problem and push the children through vaccine programs as if they were animals. I'm from the Chicago area, and I would consider Perry to be LESS conservative than the tea-party candidate (Bill Brady) who won the GOP nomination for Governor of Illinois last year.
By Illinois standards, Perry would be a establishment Republican who TALKS super conservative but governs as a mushy right-of-center Republican. He'd be about where state Senator Kirk Dillard is on the political spectrum (Dillard was the "conservative" candidate who lost the primary after it was discovered he praised then Senator Obama in 2007 TV ads)
As I said before, it's not possible to be irresolute about home schooling your children, when you understand that sending them to the public school is tantamount to handing them over to perverts, criminals, and degraded government apparatchiks.
You wouldn't think of handing over your 13 year old daughter to a street pimp. We feel exactly the same about handing ours over to the public school system. There's not a dime's worth of difference between them, as far as we're concerned.
We've been at this for over a decade now, and there's no going back for us. We simply do not see the public schools as an alternate solution for educating our children. There's home schooling, or nothing.
Kudos to you for being a home schooling pioneer. Many, many families have likely benefited from all of the hard work you did in the early days.

I hung out at other forums before coming to FR (as a lurker) around 2003 or so. In the places where I used to post, it was considered very bad form to not create a personal profile. Matter of fact, people who didn't were looked upon with a degree of suspicion. It was just considered a courtesy to the community to let everyone know who you were.

I’m glad that you mentioned State Sen. Dillard. Do you know of a conservative who will oppose him, in the 2012 primary? I hope that he’ll lose because he voted for the state dream act and because he’s been a state senator since 1993. 20 years is long enough.
I have never heard of that before. I would have suspected many create false images of their lives there anyway in order to troll and disrupt, so I know I would personally never have taken any profile at face value anyway. However, I'll consider the idea that some may think it is impolite. Thanks for giving me that info.
