A parasite known as the "brain-eating amoeba" has claimed its second young American victim this month.
Christian Strickland, a 9-year-old from Henrico County in Virginia contracted an infection after visiting a fishing camp in his state. He died of meningitis on August 5.
This week, health department officials confirmed that the deadly amoeba--officially known as "Naegleria fowleri"--was to blame.
"Sadly, we have had a Naegleria infection in Virginia this summer," Dr. Keri Hall of the Virginia Department of Health, told The Richmond Times-Dispatch. "It's important that people be aware of . . . safe swimming messages."
Earlier this month, Courtney Nash succumbed to the brain-eating amoeba after diving off a dock into the St. John's River at her grandmother's house in Florida.

Naeglaria lives in warm ponds - that - not to put too fine a point on it - cows pee in.
It’s worse if you jump feet first into the water and the water is pushed up your nose.
So safe swimming is don’t swim in warm ponds that cows pee in, and if you must put on some kind of nose plugs and don’t jump in feet first.

You’d be surprised (maybe not) at how many of holders’ people don’t know how to swim. I’ve spent time over several summers teaching kids something we used to take for granted.
Any way to capture and grow this and make a weapon out of it?
Cause it probably came from some CIA group or other to begin with.
I wonder do animals have an immunity to this?
If so they should look into that as a treatment option.

My dad was in the Navy in WW II. The ship’s chef was black and didn’t know how to swim. He and some of his fellow sailors thought they would teach him so they threw him overboard. Said he stirred up a lot of foam so they had to haul him out. Didn’t learn how to swim. I never thought to ask him how his next meal tasted.
