President Obama has again acknowledged the necessity of doing something many Democrats fiercely oppose -- reforming entitlement programs, such as Medicare and Social Security.
On a Midwest bus tour stop in Minnesota, Obama spoke in favor of changes to entitlement programs being eyed by the 12-member congressional committee charged with finding budget savings that will get past partisan gridlock, stave off future credit downgrades and increase the federal debt.
"There have been times when our side, when Democrats arent always as flexible as we need to be," Obama said. "Sometimes I do get frustrated when I hear folks say, 'You can't make any changes to any government programs.' Well, that can't be right."
The president has repeatedly conceded that something must be done, saying Medicare in particular cannot survive without reform.
"We will not be able to sustain that program no matter how much taxes go up," he said in late July. "I mean, it's not an option for us to just sit by and do nothing."
In spite of that, just as the president suggested, many Democrats remain steadfastly opposed to any changes in any of the programs. In fact, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi boasted that Democrats had blocked such reforms in the deficit talks.
"We did protect the benefits, the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. That is a priority for us," she said.

This is what poverty looked like during the Great Depression:

This is what poverty looks like under Obama:
We are the only generation in human history to have "obese poor people."
Yep....but you can be certain anything he might present as a cut will simply be positioning a move into Obamacare...won't be a cut at all.
Need to remember though we know he lies fluently....he's highly deceptive above all else.....there's always a sinister purpose behind statements as that.
When will it stop? I don’t know - hopefully before we bottom out the way England did, when its perpetually greedy never-employed welfare class decided it needed giant-screen TVs and nobody was going to stand in its way.
Very depressing. But I think that if we don’t get Obama and his cronies out of the WH soon, that’s where we’re headed.
Isn’t that the truth! Photo says a thousand words about poverty in America.
I recently read an article that there is no poverty in America for those on the welfare rolls. Where poverty resides are with those who refuse to be on the rolls and are struggling, cutting down to the bare minimums and trying to make it work for their families. Even then life for the poor in the US can hardly be compared to that of third world.
Obama cannot be trusted to negotiate in good faith. End of story.
Changing the Social security and medicare programs so that the top payers in get robed of their proportional “investment” is just transforming the unconstitutional programs into even more of a thieving redistribution scheme.
The System needs to be privatized and most of all volunteerized.
Why does no one mention the entitlements we give to illegals? Take away from seniors who have paid into the system but give entitlements to illegals and a lot of lazy butts on welfare who are able to work but why work when they can be taken care of? I am a senior and I always found a way of making some money for food for my kids. I even picked up aluminum cans whe the price was high. Why can’t others use their imagination to help make ends meet? I also worked hard and finally became a nurse at 40 years of age and believe me the emergency room would be full of medicaid receipents instead of going to a doctors office where the charges were cheaper. But no lets threaten the seniors and our fine military.
All talk. An election is coming up. Yet 0bama has a RECORD and A LOT to answer for. Doesn’t go over too well when he is a proven LIAR.
Well said. This punk is as disingenuous and corrupt as they come.
He’s definitely in a panicked state and I love it.
This is really very simple. Obama’ pollsters have told him that his base will still vote for him in 2011, no matter what he says or does. They have alo told him that rhetoric like this will give him an advantage with the independents he needs so badly, by making him look moderate. It’s good for Obama.
The funny thing is, this will create a longer term backlash against Liberals, by making it look like Liberals are so radical that even this radically leftist politician rejects their orthodoxy. That will leave a longer lasting mark on Liberalism and Leftism.
It is funny. His gross failures as a leader were making his type of radical leftism look like a total failure, and horribly damaging the movement. Now, as if that wasn’t bad enough, he is coming out and attacking the Democrat base as a bunch of dangerous leftist radicals, even by his radical Leftist standards. So even as he peronally destroys the reputation of leftism by wrecking the country, he points to the rank and file leftists, and says, “those guys will really destroy your country, if you let them.”
He just keeps digging. I almost would have voted for him, if I knew he would do this much damage to the Democrats.
Wow, this is astonishing. I didn’t see that one coming at all. Perhaps there is some triangulation going on.
Sickoflibs has been talking about this. Basically it’s just talk to snow the swing voters. The issue is a non-starter for the entire rat party.
Your going to see him talk very conservative from here on out. The Scam is in play.
Soebarkah likes his cocaine and silk.
I concur!!!
Me??? Well maybe...
House Democrat: We wouldn`t cut entitlements or the rate of increase for Obama
National Debt Politics : How Obama sees the voter as stupid
This way he gets to tell them that he was blocked in fixing the deficit and cutting entitlement cuts, while not having to cut them and instead proposing increases of spending , he can make everyone happy.
Do not be fooled it is just obama trying to get reelected by any means possible If he can get the middle to vote for him again
