A life cut too short, sad.

Wow. 34 years? Seems like just yesterday the news was breaking on my radio. Time flies.

It was a life cut too short due to excesses on the part of this so-called king.

I was nine years old on my old paint pony when I heard Elvis was dead riding on the edge of my father's cotton field. I remember it so clear. Since we only lived forty miles south of Memphis, my mother and aunts went to viewing of Elvis.

You had to be alive during those years to “get” why Elvis was so popular. And that’s coming from someone who wasn’t there. As a guitarist, I know that a whole generation of rock players were in love with Scotty Moore. And I get that Elvis was on the crest of the wave bringing rock and roll to the world. Even so, I’ve never really understood his massive appeal. He sings as bad as Cher.

Seeing anniversaries like that, remembering Elvis after 34 years, makes me feel older.

Elvis Presley (1935 - 1967)

On Aug. 16, 1977 the music world was shocked when the King of Rock 'n Roll died at the young age of 42.

Someone needs to correct their dates... or the math.

I’ve only read one book about Elvis.

It’s “Last Train To Memphis: The Rise Of Elvis Presley” by Peter Guralnik. It’s Volume I of a two volume set.

Absolutely fantastic. The book starts out with his birth in Tupelo and ends when he’s inducted into the Army. It’s fascinating reading. As you read the book, you’ll see that he really came out of nowhere. He was a likable enough guy in his youth but no one ever saw the star power in him.

served his country in the U.S. Army

I served with Elvis in the Army in Friedburg, Germany. He could have taken it easy by going on TDY and spend his two years entertaining, but he chose to do the tough duty like the rest of us. I have always respected him for this reason.

>>> Remembering "The King"

The death of Elvis may have diminished music,. but on the positive side it stimulated a new renaissance in art.

There are many songs Elvis recorded that were better than the original artists rendition. One of my favorite tunes is "Burning Love". It was written by D. Linde and sent to Elvis on scratchy tape.

My wife and a sister in law still think Elvis is alive. They say his name is spelled wrong on his headstone and a case full of his favorite sunglasses is missing.

Best entertainer ever! No one could replace his voice. Great loss. I was his biggest fan. We lived in Amarillo TX at the time of his death and the local radio rock station put out a call for people to bring in Elvis Records. I had them all.
