DES MOINES Rick Perry, on his first day of extended Iowa campaigning, foreshadowed his coming assault Monday against Mitt Romney and swiped back at the former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalists suggestion that others in the GOP race dont understand the economy.
In back-to-back answers, Perry nodded at the difference between his economic record as Texas governor and Romneys in Massachusetts and then drew a cultural contrast between his background as an Air Force pilot and family farmer and his opponents high finance pedigree.
Its being able to work with your legislature to get the right tax and regulatory and legal system in place and we done that in Texas, Perry said of how he created jobs in his decade-long tenure as governor.
Talking to reporters as he made his way through the state fair here, the Texas governor was even more direct when asked about private business experience something Romney said sets him apart from the Republican field.
Taking a populist shot at his multi-millionaire rival, Perry cited Romneys former employer by name and contrasted that experience with his time helping run his familys cotton farm.
I was in the private sector for thirteen years after I left the Air Force, he said. You know, I wasnt on Wall Street, I wasnt working at Bain Capital, but the principles of the free market they work whether youre in a farm field in Iowa or whether youre on Wall Street.
Hours earlier, Romney, on the trail in Litchfield, N.H., had taken a not-so-subtle jab at Perry.

You are not getting it. Perry is a faud, pure and simple.
I don’t care if he can beat Obama or not. I’m not pitting a brain dead idiot in from our side again.
They said the same thing about Reagan. He is just too Conservative. Folks will never vote him in. We’re just giving Carter four more years. Bush is the guy this time, he can win.
NOT gonna happen with my help.
I think JimRob likes me. He must. I have not changed my tone in years and speak my mind. I’ve made lots of enemies that claim to be all powerful on this site. They claim to report me for whatever reason, and still I’m here. It’s probably because I’m right, literally and figuratively...and certainly no RINO.
You do realize that Ronald Reagan was initially a Democrat. As a matter of fact, if FR was around when Reagan ran, you'd probably be sitting here accusing him of being a RINO.
Furthermore, since you use the word Bozo--the Dems ridiculed Reagan big time for his movie "Bedtime for Bonzo," as part of their strategy.Your posts only will make the Democrats campaign easier.
Wouldn't it be better to talk up the candidate you support, rather than do the Dem's work of tearing down candidates that very well could be running against Obama. Just saying...
You must not have noticed that Rove, while he did some good for the Party in the past, backed Perry’s opponent in 2010.
I believe using you in there, and an and in there means that he would have to do both without me.
Sorry. I suppose I’m sensitive. We’ve been under siege for the last three days. The fact is, we can’t help the accent anymore than Teddy Kennedy could. A drawl doesn’t mean stupid. It just means a drawl.
Newguy, I apologize. I’m afraid I’m a bit sensitive. Texas has been under attack for the last three days. I shouldn’t be so defensive.
I am going to listen and give him a fair hearing. There are things in his history to recommend him. His military service being one that matters to me. The last interview I saw with MB was impressive...her lack of executive experience is a problem.

No, you are not getting it. If Obama gets reelected, we are through, end of story.
I will do everything I can to help him lose, but you want to just sit this one out if you don’t get your ideal candidate.
I have news for you, now is nothing like the past, Obama is nothing like Carter, he is far more destructive and I believe he is purposely trying to destroy this country.
But you sit this one out.
You proceed from a false assumption that it’s your candidate or Zero. I don’t play that game. If the GOP puts up a liberal again like it did last time, my vote will go elsewhere. The same copy and paste protestations I’ve heard for years. I am interested in a victory for Conservative, not in a Pyrrhic victories for the cause. “But he/she can win !” has been the Siren call of the RINO for ages. So, what do we win ? What’s the prize for Conservatives ? Stop Zero ? The leftist agenda ain’t limited to him, it’s been infiltrating the GOP for years via statist pols calling themselves moderates or even “Conservatives” when their records reflect anything but. It’s the agenda that must be stopped. Electing “execrable light” ain’t going to stop it.
The same nonsense was spewed here 8 years ago with the Ah-noldbots in the CA recall. But he can win ! Yeah, he won. And he spent 7 1/2 years making his terrible liberal Democrat predecessor look like Calvin Coolidge. He didn’t help the GOP, didn’t help Conservatives, tried to screw McClintock (the only man who could’ve won and turned the state around for the better) and the state of CA and spent like there was no tomorrow. A Socialist prize. And when he was done, he turned the state over to Jerry Brown. Brilliant. He won ! We lost. No thank you. Enough. I support Conservatives whose record matches their rhetoric. You want anything light on the purity, keep your Democrats, they’ll give it to you straight. Better then getting knifed from the back by a self-declared ally.
And smooth...
I’ll bet you’ve never heard of MurryMom.
Yeah. I like Bachmann too, and have no doubt she WILL be president one day. A Perry/Bachmann ticket would be great!
sorry, I am not sure what I do to make the multiple post.
No. Should I know MurryMom? Is she another one I’m supposed to be afraid of?
Spare me the talking points, I’ve heard ‘em all. Reagan was not an opportunist. Your boy is. He only ran as a Republican because he couldn’t take down Hightower in the Dem primary.
The arrogance of the Perrybot’s in behaving like he has the nomination all sewn up is getting too be a bit much.
This is actually how Perry is running his campaign. It's fascinating to watch.
They talk about negatives on Palin while ignoring how difficult it will be to shake the Bush 2 syndrome that is coming for Perry.
The more the American people see of the guy and hear him the less they will want him.
I'm not making a judgment on him personally, but I'm telling you people right now that he sounds like Bush and looks like Bush and has the same mannerisms as Bush.
He could possible become a bit of a national joke.
So, if Perry gets the nomination he has to rely on Obama absolutely tanking (as he currently is)then he will be okay.
I sure would like to have someone to vote FOR this time, not just against.
