At fair, Rick Perry fires first shots at Mitt Romney
Politico ^ | August 15, 2001 | Jonathan Martin

DES MOINES – Rick Perry, on his first day of extended Iowa campaigning, foreshadowed his coming assault Monday against Mitt Romney and swiped back at the former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist’s suggestion that others in the GOP race don’t understand the economy.

In back-to-back answers, Perry nodded at the difference between his economic record as Texas governor and Romney’s in Massachusetts and then drew a cultural contrast between his background as an Air Force pilot and family farmer and his opponent’s high finance pedigree.

“It’s being able to work with your legislature to get the right tax and regulatory and legal system in place — and we done that in Texas,” Perry said of how he created jobs in his decade-long tenure as governor.

Talking to reporters as he made his way through the state fair here, the Texas governor was even more direct when asked about private business experience — something Romney said sets him apart from the Republican field.

Taking a populist shot at his multi-millionaire rival, Perry cited Romney’s former employer by name and contrasted that experience with his time helping run his family’s cotton farm.

“I was in the private sector for thirteen years after I left the Air Force,” he said. “You know, I wasn’t on Wall Street, I wasn’t working at Bain Capital, but the principles of the free market — they work whether you’re in a farm field in Iowa or whether you’re on Wall Street.”

Hours earlier, Romney, on the trail in Litchfield, N.H., had taken a not-so-subtle jab at Perry.

Conservatives support Conservative causes and candidates. When you’ve got to bend, twist, spin and lie to justify your candidate as a “Conservative”, somebody has to pull out the scissors and cut up your membership card. In other words, you guys can’t just pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining and expect me to nod my head in agreement. That’s what liberals do.

So paying sub-par prices for over 70,000 acres of private land in Texas alone, makes you think Perry understands land owner’s rights. Okay.

Cutting people’s farms in half in a line clear across the state, so they have to drive their farm equipment twenty miles to get to the other side of their property to farm it, sounds like a great idea to you. Okay.

Him wanting that to take place over 4,000 miles of Trans-Texas Corridor like territory through the rest of the United States, makes you think he understands land owner’s rights. Okay.

This was his brainchild. He envisioned massive imports coming into the U.S. from Mexico and Central and South America. Eh, who needs jobs in the U.S. Okay.

He wanted for force every single girl in Texas to submit to getting a Gardasil shot by edict from the state. You must think that’s another Conservative move. Okay.

He was supporting Al Gore, 19 years after I had started to vote. He was supporting him in 1988, as Reagan’s term was coming to an end. This doesn’t bother you. Okay.

He was an adult in 1988, had voted in 1980 and 1986. Who did he vote for? Carter and Mondale? That doesn’t bother you? Okah.

Please tell me. Why would I have to be the supporter of another candidate to object to this guy?

For the Record, right now I like Bachmann, but I’m not convinced she’s who I’ll support by mid 2012.

Why are you buying off on this guy?

What this looks like is a big movement here to cram him down our throats, despite the absolute fact this guy IS NOT one of us.

You tell me why I shouldn’t wonder who is driving this effort, and which party is directly behind it?

I am sure JimRob dislikes Obama more than any other GOP candidates (declared). Anyway, why are you speaking for him?

That’s as bright as saying staying home is a vote for Perry.

What’s with you folks? Wake the hell up.

Wow, you really hate Palin, don’t you ? BTW, nobody ever said Perry wasn’t a “good” politician. He is. It’s just that he’s not a Conservative leader. You want a politician, fine. The rest of us want a leader. Not Al Gore’s campaign manager and a Rudybot who is open borders.

Just because Zero is absolutely execrable doesn’t mean our alternative is to go with someone slightly less execrable. You guys use the same arguments as the Slick Willardbots from the last time around... in 1980 you guys would’ve rather had Gerald Ford and Bush, Sr. instead of Reagan just because they were “better” than Carter.

OMG, folks get a fricken grip. Not voting for Perry is no more a vote for Obama, than not voting for Obama is a vote for Perry?

Where did you folks get your marbles?

God love ya, but come on folks.

Give me a man I can vote for. Gore’s campaign manager? Really? Didn’t vote for Reagan? Really?

Wait a minute... ... ... ... ...

No, this isn’t DemocratUnderground, the DailyKos, MoveOn.org, or Huffpoo.com.

Are you folks lost?

You declared for Palin who is not even a candidate. You are trashing Perry. You have no other winning prospect. And you keep whining about me. What is wrong with you?

So, you are the guy with the golden scissors ?

Conservatives who support the conservative cause should realize that you need a candidate that can actually win the election.
Do yourself a big favor and really try to image what 4 more years of Obama will be like.
Image obamacare fully implemented, an EPA further out of control, Iran having fully operational nukes, taxes raised, gasoline and energy prices even higher, more and more jobs lost - I can keep going, do you need me to help you out further ?

I’m sorry you dislike Texans so much.

That's disingenuous. newguy357 never said that. They said they would vote for Perry if he were the nominee. What more do you want?

I declared for Fred Thompson when he wasn’t a candidate. Telling the truth on Perry is not trashing. If you can’t tolerate the truth about him and his record being vigorously vetted and debated, you’re free to start up your own website where you can worship and adore him and bask in the glow of his “pure political intentions” and where nothing about him is ever questioned.

I am a college professor. You should see my undergrad transcripts. Cs, Ds, Fs. It’s humiliating and a miracle I got into grad school at all. Once there, all As. I ahd grown up and actually cared. Don’t hold the grades against him. Obama and Palin won’t even release theirs. LISTEN to him. Just listen. He is sharp as a razor and will never embarass us.

You listen to this well.

Threats to sit out the Presidential election are not helpful at this point.

We’re still hearing the media and the progressives tell us that 2006 and 2008 were mandates for Dems and Obama. They expect our candidates to try for the middle or left of middle, in a repeat of the attempt to win the “independents” in 2008.

There are no perfect candidates, but at least this year, the Republicans are (with the exception of ) trying to move farther to the right. Perry is there, has been all along. Even as a Democrat, he said he was trying to move the Dems to the conservative side.

Not lost, just understanding reality. Perry is not my first choice either, but I will support anyone that CAN beat Obama.
Bachman, Cain and yes, Palin would all lose in the general election against Obama.
