Did Perry Even Vote For Reagan?
Posted on 08/15/2011 5:41:08 PM PDT by Minus_The_Bear
Rick Perry was a Democrat until Karl Rove convinced him to switch parties and run as a Republican against Jim Hightower for Agriculture Commissioner.
Perry is always mentioning Reagan... But no Yellow-Dog Texas Democrat who was a chairman for Al Gore in 1988 would have voted for Reagan. Some Democrats would have... but not a leading member of the Texas party.
Perry is just too slick. He is not conservative at all.

Gore was a hypocrite, then and now.
So was his father.

First you say....'We are ultimately on the same side'
Then you say....'You are gross, and very misguided.'
LOL!!!!!!!! See, it was spiritual discernment that led me to say Same side? I'm not willing to agree with that at all I KNOW who to agree with or not.
Score one for spiritual discernment!!

That's an outrageous lie and you know it. He was NEVER a Conservative, period, neither in the Senate nor in the House. His voting record was hardly different from Ted Kennedy's. In 1988, the year he ran for President, his record was 91% liberal. In 1992, it was a perfect 100% liberal. As one of his constituents who NEVER voted for him, I well remember. <<
>> In 1984 when Perry was enlisting for Democrat leadership, Texas went 64% for Reagan, Perry did not vote for Reagan, and in 1988 took over as a leader to defeat Reagan's veep in Texas. I'm a Texan, I was not confused about Reagan and Al Gore during the 1980s. <<
Yep, the "Gore was an old fashioned conservative Democrat when Perry endorsed him" myth was debunked long ago on FR. I never bought the "conservative Democrat" argument, but even I didn't know any better since I was a kid in the 80s and never lived in Texas or Tennessee. If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I would have assumed Gore was more moderate in '88 and probably guessed his ACU rating at the time was 30-40% conservative. Instead, the guy was rated more liberal than Bernie Sanders the year he ran for President! Perry was campaign manager for an envirowacko socialist, plain and simple.
And this history revisionism about Texas RATs were "the conservative party" during the height of Reaganism is the biggest load of B.S. I've ever heard. Imagine if a video surfaced of Perry at a Walter Mondale campaign rally in Texas during the 80s. I wouldn't be surprised if the Perrybots argue "let's look at the context... Walter Mondale was the CONSERVATIVE candidate for President in 1984, Reagan Republicans were the liberals then...", blah blah blah.
This is really looking desperate on their part. Why is it so hard for them to admit that Perry has endorsed LIBERALS in both parties?
Even the nutty Trumpistas that were trying to sell him as a "conservative tea party candidate" never came up with insane cr@p like "Nancy Pelosi was a CONSERVATIVE Democrat back when Trump endorsed her... she didn't become liberal until AFTER the 2008 elections..."

You forget that Perry wanted the Reagan Revolution to be burned down by replacing Reagan with Al Gore. Totally over the top. Elected Democrats are going to back democrats in the primary process, and vice-versa. Just a fact. Perry happened to pick a guy that was on the more moderate end of the party at that time. This issue simply is not a major one, as there are any number of people in our party's history who once were in the opposition.
Let's focus on the issues of the day, and not tear down possible nominees. One of these folks is going to need all our support in a year to end the Obamanation.

I'm not sure that's the case.
Certainly Al Gore wanted to burn down the Reagan Revolution. But that's something that wasn't apparent in the 80s and early 90s ... it only started becoming apparent when Clinton/Gore won in 1992 and really didn't come out until after Gore (thankfully) left public service and didn't have to deal with the constraints of elective office (and vying for such)
I remember that time pretty well, because it was when I really began taking an interest (academic and participatory) in politics. Remember that Clinton and Gore were big players in the DLC, which was supposed to be the organization that would drag the Democrat Party kicking and screaming to the right and allow them to win national elections again.
As it was, Clinton and Gore in the White House quickly showed themselves as Left/Liberal opportunists. Something that truly angered and alienated the Conservative/DNC/Blue Dog element within their Party.
I was in DC in the mid-1990s, remember pretty well reading Hotline daily to see which Democrat (and sometimes multiple Democrats) had flipped over to the GOP because Clinton/Gore weren't what they promised to be. The big ones I remember were Richard Shelby, Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Billy Tauzin (a good, but my recollection incomplete, list of 1990s Dem to GOP party switchers can be found
here). Nighthorse Campbell particularly, because it was so funny how CNN immediately flipped the "D" on his name (screen caption) to an "R" as soon as he said he was a Republican.
Given the politics of the time (and note that Rick Perry switched in 1989, according to the list. Well before the folks that needed to see Clinton/Gore in action to have their eyes opened), I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this particular issue. NOT endorsing him, just that I'll make my decision on whether to support him or any other candidate on different issues.

No doubt... but the South used to be full of blue dog dems, many who have since become republicans after seeing what the national party became. In fact I still know republicans in North Carolina who run as democrats for local offices.

I’m 50 and I regret that I actually voted for Mondale in ‘84 when I was 23 years old and in med school. I really did not pay attention to politics and at that time and my dad was a big lib professor. Once I got married and started earning a living, I changed and continued to become more and more conservative.

Thanks for the clarification. Now I know.
There are two reasons that I oppose the vaccine. It has caused harm in some cases and seems to have been pushed through, unlike other drugs that have a good record but still are not given the license. The other reason is the message sent to young people, a green light to be promiscuous, which is both immoral and a gateway to other STDs.
