Palin's weekend road trip across the Midwest
NBC ^ | 08/14/11 | Alex Moe

After a roughly two-month hiatus, Sarah Palin's "One Nation" bus tour was back on the road this weekend. This time, she traveled across the Midwest, where she learned about past U.S. presidents -- and reacted to developing news about the 2012 presidential race.

Earlier this week, the former Alaska governor announced on her website that she would be stopping by the Iowa State Fair on Friday, which put the political world on edge as she was coming to such an important early nominating state -- the day before the closely watched Ames Straw Poll.

While at the fair, Palin said that she still considers herself a “potential candidate,” and that she will make her decision in the coming months, so her supporters will have time to choose another candidate if she’s a no.

“I don't want to be seen as stringing people along,” Palin said at the state fair when speaking of a timeline to decide if she will run for president this cycle.

But after leaving Iowa early Saturday, the bus trip took a different focus -- on American history. Like the tour through the Northeast back in May, Palin (along with her husband Todd, daughter Piper, and her niece) visited some significant historical sites.

People were talking about that on another site...that CNN and NBC is fairer to Palin now than Fox News is!

She was previously unaware of past U.S. presidents?

Whoa.

Boy did she suck the life out of those other “candidates” in Iowa when she showed up. Go Sarah Go!

They gotta kiss some butt so they can later point to it as an example of their balanced coverage....pathetic.

Fox has to be tough on her for the same reason.

All of it is BS when ‘fair’ should be the standard. Thats why no one will ever trust the MSM again.

Maybe they figure that she isn’t running so why continue to beat up in her.

I’m curious to see if she if going to the Ford Presidential Library.

Yup. She pretty much took over the stage. That just drives the Palin-bashers nuts. On FR you see them losing their heads and posting nonsense.

I doubt it. All of her “history lessons” seem to be focused on individuals and events that define the spirit of American freedom, greatness, and exceptionalism. Somehow, that’s kind of hard to do with Ford. I’d bet against that one if I were you.

I just thought it would make for a good opportunity to be in Michigan where I expect any potential candidate to visit. hmmmm

Exactly right. Her last leg took her to the founders, this leg to Reagan and his roots. Filling up that jar of inspiration cuz she'll be running for the right reasons.

As an aside, she said when she does announce, no one will be able to miss it. Helluva set up if someone's announcing a non event.

I think most of the media will turn to like her as they get to know her. McCain’s people are the ones who ruined her with the media. She’s campaigning her way now. Bachmann is getting quite the reputation of being rude and unobliging with the media (her husband and 2 aids pushing Don Lemons CNN into a golf cart and refusing to answer questions, etc).

On Palin’s 1st bus tour, too, she answered all of their questions and really impressed them.

Palin was kissing babies at the fair. The difference between her and Obama is that she likes babies, while Obama just sees them as a punishment for the foolish mothers who don't abort.

Been away from radio and internet (and am always away from TV!) for the past four days, essentially incommunicado. So I'm wondering, is Fox being tough on her, or are they painting her invisible?

Anybody got an answer on that? I hope they're being tough on her.

I did hear Bachmann a bit today the radio and thought she did really great in an interview with a hostile reporter ... I was impressed. Bachmann is real warrior spirit, no doubt about it. And I love her voice, literally, as in the lovely deep, grounded, solid timbre of her voice. Very few women have such a nice voice. I wish Palin had been blessed with the same kind of vocal chords!

When I hear Bachmann's take on the issues, I love her. I'm impressed. But man ... hey, I'm a Christian and will say so to anyone who asks, but what goes on between me and God, as in "He called me to do this," is between me and God and maybe a few special friends. One of the hostile interviewer's "questions" (really, more of a criticism) had to do with her saying somewhere that God had "called" her to run for office, that kind of thing.

You know, I wonder if any of the Founding Fathers yakked or wrote openly and piously about their personal relationships with God? Something tells me that while the Founders acknowledged the (duh! Obviously!) debt to the Bible and the Judeo-Christian ethic and their own foundation in it, I doubt they wore their religion so piously on their sleeves the way some politicians do today, and when it goes beyond a mere cursory mention, it becomes solid pandering, in my opinion. It's a real turn-off.

Bachmann -- or Palin, or any politician, speaking publicly at any forum (except maybe a church) about how God "called" them to run for this or that office -- drops a couple of notches in my opinion, as does anybody who goes around volunteering that kind of info. Unless it's in a preacher, I think it's a form of bragging, pride, pandering, arrogance. If a reporter asked ME that kind of question, "You've said that God 'called' you do do [such and such] ..." I'd say, "What goes on between God and me is private, and what goes on bewteen any individual and his or her god is private. Ask me about something that's public."

Bachmann is a great warrior, a vital, crucial person to have on "our" side, but she's a bull in a China shop. I think she's a lousy judge of when to keep her mouth shut. I have the same weakness, so I feel qualified to judge!

Palin is really so superior in that way, though I know many don't want to believe it. Palin is smart and a diplomat and communicator, it's her nature. Bachmann's nature is that of a warrior, a fighter, a leader in battle, a valued patriot. Palin strikes me as a leader in war.

I sure hope Palin gets in, and I sure hope that it's timed such that people are ready to realizes that Palin is the superior candidate for GOP. I hope God blesses the U.S. with Palin as its next president.

Great post. And that issue you discussed is one of the reasons she diminished in my eyes and one of the reasons I will look less favorably on a Perry run.

Do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God. That is all I require.

Thank you for the kind words!

Thinking about it, I identify with Bachmann a whole lot, the warrior "leader in battle" kind of personality. The soldier, the guard dog. The fighter.

As Dirty Harry told Lt. Briggs: "Well, you're a good man, lieutenant. A good man always knows his limitations." I know my limitations. I know that I'm not nearly as good at anticipating and avoiding the more subtle avenues, implications, and traps in communicating with people, as some friends I have, who I'd want to kind of negotiate on my behalf because I know I'd probably mess it up (though they'd be smarter to rely on me for "warrior" tasks -- that kind of thing is their limitation -- they just can't be "the bad guy," if you know what I mean). I identify with Bachmann a lot more than I identify with Palin. That's why I'd a whole lot rather vote for Palin as president.
